July 31, 2019 - Grace Manor is hosting a school supply drive to benefit foster children in the Shelby County and Nacogdoches County areas. We are accepting donations until August 1. School supplies for all ages and grades are needed.

July 31, 2019 - Attending the Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha State Convention in Arlington were local Delta Gamma members - President Wendy Watson, State Photographer Carol McMillan, Archive chairman Fannie Watson and Second Vice President Nora Robinson. There were approximately 850 members from all over the state present for workshops, luncheons, necrology service, and ending with the 90th Alpha State Banquet. Mrs. Fannie Watson was honored in the convention program by Delta Gamma for her many years of service, inspiration, friendship, and mentoring.

July 30, 2019 - Any City of Center trash pickup for Tuesday, July 30th that was missed will be picked up on Wednesday, July 31st.

July 30, 2019 - Center 10U Youth AAA Dixie Boys won the State Championship and now are on their way to the Dixie Youth World Series in Ruston, Louisiana. They will be playing against 10 other State Championship teams on August 3rd-8th. In order to help pay for expenses to help get there they will be selling BBQ Chicken Plates. 

BBQ Chicken Plate Fundraiser will take place on July 30th on the North Side of the Center Square. Plates are $10 and are available for pick-up or delivery for order 10 or more. Contact: Coach Robby Dubea at (936)-488-9979, Coach Brian Horton at (936)-332-0738, or any parent to preorder.

Plates will include: Leg Quarters, Baked Beans, Potato Salad, a drink and Dessert prepared by the Shelby County Cookers.

July 29, 2019 - The Texas A&M Agrilife County Extension Office will be hosting the annual Poultry Festival Boiler Show Workshop Monday, July 29th from 6-8pm at 266 Nacogdoches, St. (Old Elementary School Library Building). Participants will learn about chick maintenance, feeding, how to construct a pen, and much more. This is a free program and open to anyone. July 29, 2019 - Planning is underway for the 43rd East Texas Poultry Festival, presented by Farmers State Bank. The Poultry Festival will be held October 3-5 on the historic downtown Center square. There are still spaces available for Arts and Crafts vendors. 

To receive an application and a copy of the guidelines call the Chamber office or go online to the Chamber website www.shelbycountychamber.com and find the Poultry Festival page under Events. 

Applications are being accepted at the Chamber office until Friday, August 9th. Gold Sponsors for the Festival are City of Center, Drewery Construction, Pilgrims Pride and Tyson Foods 

The fee for the rental of a 10' x 10' booth is $125. Each booth includes a canopy and an electrical outlet. Booths must be manned continuously during the hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. all three days of the festival. 

First time exhibitors are asked to send three color photographs showing merchandise that will be in the booth. The Arts & Crafts committee will select the vendors based on the type and quality of merchandise and notify them of their selection on Friday, August 17.

July 29, 2019 - The 43rd Annual East Texas Poultry Festival, presented by Farmers State Bank, is right around the corner – October 3rd, 4th and 5th. Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your creative side in art, quilting, canning, crafts, woodworking, metal art and photography.

All creative art divisions and are open to Youth (6th through 12th grades) and Adults (17 and older). The art division will also be open to Elementary (K – through 5th).

This year’s Quilt Show, sponsored by Scull Timber, and Creative Arts show will be held in the Old Historic Courthouse on the downtown square. The Photography show will be held at Vision Source.

Start taking photos, quilting quilts, canning your spring and summer harvest and creating art for these events. We want to showcase and recognize ALL our local talent.

July 29, 2019 - Help Shelby County Chamber of Commerce kick off the Second Annual Poultry Festival Car and Motorcycle Show sponsored by Zack’s Tint Shop. The Show will be held on Saturday, October 5th as a part of the Poultry Festival Saturday activities. It will be held from 10:00am until 2:00pm on the downtown square. Enter your car and/or motorcycle, or just stop by and view the vehicles.

There are 3 categories: Cars pre-1972; Cars 1972 and newer; and Motorcycles. Trophies will be given for the top 3 in each category. There will also be a People’s Choice Award.

Early registration is underway. Early registration fee for cars is $20.00 and $15.00 for Motorcycles. After September 27th the entry fee will be $25.00 for Cars and $20.00 for Motorcycles. Registration includes a Gate Entrance Button into the Poultry Festival. Registration Packets can be picked up in October at Zack’s Tint Shop located at 1419 Highway 87 N.

July 26, 2019 - On June 25, 1950, the North Korean Army began an offensive to invade South Korea that resulted in the capture of the republic’s capital, Seoul, within four days. The United States, the United Kingdom and other members of the United Nations moved to actively defend South Korea – an effort that would last until July 27, 1953, when negotiations concluded and fighting finally ended.

To commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who served in the Korean War, Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary hosted a Wreath Laying at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the Historic Courthouse in Center on Friday, July 26th, 2019. Saturday, July 27th, 2019 marks the 66th anniversary of the ceasefire which halted the 1950-53 Korean War. With the assistance of Veteran Travis Snider, Veteran Dale Step, who served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1952, hung the wreath. The names of Shelby County Veterans killed in action, missing in action, or taken as prisoners of war during the Korean War were read.
