May 13, 2019 - The Fannie Brown Booth Library and the officers of the Friends of the Library would like to thank the community for its generous support of the Library Book Sale held at the end of April. The success of the book sale was due to the work of all involved. This includes the community members who purchased books, volunteers who worked, before, after and at the sale, and those who gave special monetary donations and book donations.
The library would like to give special recognition and appreciation for the many hours of planning and preparation by all the members of the Friends of the Library group. You are truly an asset to the library.

May 10, 2019 - Jonathan Liker, a Shelby County Outreach Ministries (SCOM) fundraiser committee member, drew the name of Ginia Hooper for the winner of the Mother's Day Gift Basket raffle on Friday, May 10, 2019 at the Senior Nutrition Site.
Ginia Hooper wasn't present at the drawing; however, her mother, Ann Hooper, was at the Senior Nutrition Site! Mrs. Hooper was delighted to be able to deliver the Mother's Day basket to her daughter!
Sherry Harding, SCOM Executive Director, express appreciation, "We would just like to thank all the people who have bought raffle tickets; these proceeds go to help support the ministries we have in place. Because of raffles like this, we were able to feed 16,888 meals to senior citizens last year, assist 4,062 needs in the community, giving out 3,312 emergency food boxes which feed 6,582 people."
The senior meals are provided through the Senior Nutrition Site and the Meals on Wheels Program. The food boxes are provided through the Helping Hands program. The food distributed through the Helping Hands is estimated at $165,600.

May 10, 2019 - On Thursday, March 28th the Tenaha Fire Department replaced the antenna for their department's radio system.
Mark Odom, Tenaha Fire Department Fire Chief, said, "We have had trouble for several months with our radios. With this new antenna we hope to be able to communicate with our trucks anywhere in our area. We would like to thank David Chandler with Chandler Tree Service for his help and his bucket truck."
May 7, 2019 - A strong tornado which blew through San Augustine County and parts of Shelby County caused significant damage on April 24, 2019, to parts of San Augustine.
In effort to assist those in need as a result of the incident, on April 30, 2019 a group of Shelby County Constables put together their resources to deliver supplies of food and water to San Augustine.
Constables Jamie Hagler, Pct. 2; Zack Warr, Pct. 1; Roy Cheatwood, Pct. 3, and Deputy Constable Newton Johnson put together supplies from area businesses.
The constables gathered at Double J BBQ in Shelbyville where Hagler prepared 100 half chicken plates. Nuverra Environmental Solutions contributed two pallets of bottled water and Quick Stop of Joaquin (Robin Connell) donated several cases of carbonated beverages.
Brookshire Brothers of Joaquin provided water and paper products and Whataburger of Joaquin contributed supplies as well. Raymond Construction also contributed to the constables efforts.

May 7, 2019 - New officers of William Carroll Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) were sworn in at their April 13, 2019 meeting.
The new officers for the 2019-2021 two year term are: Gina Ferren, President; Billie Dawson, Vice President; Merle Howard, Treasurer; Bonnie Dorman, Secretary; Maggie Casto, Registrar; Vickie Martin, Chaplain; Barbara McClellan, Historian; and Cary Agnew and Heather Walker, sponsors of Children of the Republic of Texas (CRT.)
During the meeting, members discussed the upcoming DRT Annual Convention which is May 30 through June 1. Casto also announced the new designation of March 1 as CRT Founder's Day which the chapter did recognized during the March 1 Texas History Month celebration on the historic downtown square where the chapter paid tribute to Texas Independence Day, Texas Flag Day, the birthday of Sam Houston, and the heroes of the Alamo and Goliad.
The chapter also recognized a special DRT member, Juanita Sample Chandler who is a 'Real Granddaughter' of the Republic of Texas. Her grandfather, James Bedford Sample, was a resident of what became Shelby County during the days of the Republic of Texas. Chandler is to also receive recognition at upcoming DRT conventions.

May 6, 2019 - UT Tyler will host its Spring 2019 Commencement ceremonies Friday and Saturday, May 3-4 in the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center.
Jazmin Patricia Romo, a 2015 Graduate of Center High School, will be receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from during the College of Engineering commencement ceremony set for 9am on May 4th. Commencement speakers are Moody Chisholm, President and CEO of UT Health East Texas, and David King, President and CEO of Primoris Services Corporation.

May 3, 2019 - The Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Spring Fundraiser on Saturday, May 4th.
Beginning at 11:00 a.m., BBQ plates with your choice of sliced beef or sausage will be available at the fire station for $8.00, including potato salad, beans and a soft drink. The evening events will begin earlier this year to include some added excitement. The annual Cake Walk will start at 4:00 p.m., featuring cakes, pies and cookies from some of the area’s best bakers.
Following the Cake Walk, spectators will witness the first annual “Battle of the Bucket”, featuring firefighters from various area fire departments competing in an old fashioned bucket race for trophies and prizes. A bucket race involves a bucket hanging from an overhead cable between two flags. Two two person hose teams are positioned on each end of the cable under the flags. The objective is to use the hose stream to push the bucket past your opponent’s flag. Teams will draw for positions in a single elimination bracket and compete for first, second and third place.
The Joaquin VFD would like to invite all area residents to come out and enjoy food, fun and fellowship while supporting a great cause!

May 3, 2019 - Josh Crawford with Shelby County Outreach Ministies (SCOM) shares a story about Marcus Gardner, a Center ISD student, who is trying to do his part. He told his teacher that he wanted to change the world, but didn't think he alone could do something. His teacher then got him to make up a poster and he began collecting items in his classroom.
Marcus and his teacher, Melissa Munoz, stopped by Shelby County Outreach Ministries, Inc. on Friday, May 3rd to donate the items he had collected which included household items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoos, lotions, etc. that would help those in need in our community.
Crawford shared that Marcus said that he especially hopes to help the homeless; and unfortunately, Shelby County does have its share of people who find themselves without a place to stay. Crawford advised SCOM assists these people the best that they can including giving them items such as these.
"Marcus, changing the world starts with people like you. I know one thing for sure, people in our community will definitely be impacted by your caring heart. Thank you so much for dropping by and donating these much-needed items!" said Crawford to this amazing young man.
If Marcus Gardner's caring heart inspires you, let his act of kindness carry on by making a donation to SCOM in Marcus' name and show what the example of one individual can do for a community. Shelby County Today was impressed by Marcus and made a $100 donation.

May 3, 2019 - The mobile Shredding Unit will be available on the Historic Downtown Center Square on Friday, May 3rd from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Community members are invited to bring documents that need to be shredded.
The Recycle Containers will be on the Downtown Square from May 3rd – 5th. Items NOT permitted in the containers are as follows:
- NO Hazardous Material
- NO Bioharzard Materials
- NO Toxic Materials
- NO Paint or Tires
- NO Freon, Oil or other Regulated Chemicals
- NO Gasoline, Propane, other Highly Flammable Chemicals
- NO Special Waste that requires a License to Transport.
Electronics are permitted in the containers. Other items allowed include, lumber, siding, drywall, roofing, wiring, insulation, all types of bathroom and kitchen appliances, cabinets, windows & doors, piping, landscape debris, municipal waste such as standard household business trash.
Volunteers will be available to help unload your vehicles on Friday from 10:00am – 2:00pm and Saturday from 10:00am until 12Noon.

May 2, 2019 - On April 26, 2019 Tenaha PD Captain Joey Hudnall, Officer Johnathan Newton and Officer Nyx (K-9) visited Self Defense America to teach the students about the dangers of drugs Captain Hudnall talked with the students about the effects of drugs and they students had lots of questions for him. Captain Hudnall took the time to answer all the questions. The students really loved the demostrations with Officers Newton and Nyx. The first demonstration was on finding drug sample pouches that were used instead of actual drugs. Two pouches were pre-hidden and Officer Nyx found them with no problem. Then Officer Newton wore the attack sleeve to show how Nyx is also the protector. When Officer Newton came at Captain Hudnall with training weapons how Officer Nyx is highly trained to attack when given the command. We were so honored to have our men and k-9 in blue come and teach today!
