January 30, 2019 (More photos) - The Annual MLK Day Celebration was held Monday, January 21st. A group gathered on the downtown square to participate in the annual march which travels from the downtown Center Square, turns onto Shelbyville Street, turns down Martin Luther King Drive and ends at Mt. Zion C.M.E. Church where participants continued honoring the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 23, 2019 - The eighth annual Princess Ball is approaching! Start planning now to attend the Shelby County Children’s Advocacy Center Princess Ball on Saturday, February 23, 2019, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the John D. Windham Civic Center. The evening will include a pink carpet entrance, music and dancing, refreshments, and a special gift for each princess that attends. Photographers will be available starting at 5:30 pm. The event is open to girls ages 3-13 and their adult family member escort. Tickets are $20 and are on sale now. Table reservations for parties of eight are available for an additional $50. You must purchase tickets before the event—they are not sold at the door. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to give your princess a magical night. January 28, 2019 - Teddy Hopkins spoke on the history, future, and purposes of the Shelby County Museum and the Library to the Golden Harvest Ministries Club at their January 21, 2019 meeting in the Fellowship hall of the First Baptist Church in Center, Texas.
The club meets on the third Monday of the month at 11:30am in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church. Visitors are always welcome to join us for a delicious covered dish luncheon, a good program and time of fellowship.

January 28, 2019 - (Click here to view program) - The Vietnam Peace Accord of 1973 was observed at the Shelby County Courthouse by VFW Post 8904 Veterans and Auxiliary Monday, January 28, 2019.
Leading the ceremony was Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster, who recited a history of the accord, which read as follows:
The Paris Peace Accords ended the fighting in Vietnam, it was signed 46 years ago on January 27, 1973 and was followed by the withdrawal of the remaining American troops. The terms of the accord called for a complete cease fire in south Vietnam. It allowed north Vietnamese forces to retain the territory they had captured, it provided for the release of all U.S. prisoners of war, and called for both sides to find a political solution to the conflict. As an enticement to South Vietnam, President Richard Nixon offered U.S. air power to enforce the peace terms; unfortunately, this was stopped in December of 1974 when Congress cut off all military aid to south Vietnam.
"More than 58,000 Americans gave their lives in the Vietnam War, and there's still 1,590 missing in action. At this very moment, we have POW MIA accounting teams continues to search around the world wherever there are missing Americans," said Hume.
"We have 12 Vietnam Veterans that were killed in action, or died in training, that are buried here in Shelby County, Texas," said Hume.
The names were read by Post and Auxiliary members Mary Fausett, Gene Hutto, Travis Snider, and Rhonda Profitt, niece of Jerry Lynn Hughes, who was present with her father Bobby McCauley.
Hume stated there are many things and stories to be remembered, "William Henry Eaden, he was the first to die in the Vietnam War. I told someone a while ago that Larry Byford, when he was in the Army he came home on leave, and he attended Shorty Andrews Funeral in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Four months later they buried Larry Byford in that same cemetery."
A memorial wreath was hung on the Shelby County Veterans Memorial by Vietnam Veteran Newton Johnson Jr. Taps was then sounded as presented by Gene Hutto, Post Commander.

January 22, 2019 - Dr. Jheri-Lynn McSwain presented the program on the Instapot to Delta Gamma members in their January meeting. She prepared much of the meal that night in the Agri-life kitchen using the demo table and the Instapot.
She requested members to fill out their ending survey on the new iPads the extension office has received. Shelby County was the first group in the state to receive these iPads for use in collating information for the extension office.
Delta Gamma is the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International of key women educators.
January 22, 2019 - The Piney Woods Photographic Society held it’s first 2019 meeting this past Saturday. The workshop featured a presentation on Flash Photography and the monthly challenge was “Open” or it might could be classified as Photographer’s Choice, with pictures submitted by club members for voting and critique.
The next meeting will be the 3rd Saturday in February, with a workshop on Leading Lines and the challenge will feature pictures submitted by club members on “Still Life.”

January 16, 2019 - Two Center ISD graduates named to Baylor University Dean's Academic Honor Roll were Elizabeth Chadwick in the Robbins College of Health and Human Services and Chloe Noel Gipson in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chadwick is a 2015 graduate of Center ISD and Gipson is a 2016 graduate of Center ISD.
More than 4,400 Baylor University students were named to the Dean's Academic Honor Roll for the 2018 fall semester. Students honored on the Dean's List are Baylor undergraduates with a minimum grade-point average of 3.7, while enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours.

January 16, 2019 - On Saturday, January 12, 2018, the members of Newbern Masonic Lodge #97 presented Mrs. Barbara Scates with the Community Builder award for her service to her community and dedication to children at Excelsior Elementary School. The event was attended by her family and friends. OES Newbern #1135 provided refreshments for the celebration. Barbara Scates is pictured on the left and Charlie Brittain, Worshipful Master of Newbern Lodge #97, on the right.
January 14, 2019 - Texas VFW District 19 held its winter meeting this past Saturday, January 12 at VFW Post 3893, Nacogdoches. Virginia Fischer who teaches at the Roughrider Academy and family joined us for lunch and the awards ceremony. Virginia was selected as the District 19 Teacher of the Year, grades 9-12.
