October 27, 2017 - U.S. Army PVT Dylan Barbee, a 2017 graduated of Tenaha High School, completed boot camp and graduated from A.I.T. training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri on October 27, 2017 as a combat engineer.
Barbee is the son of Jennifer Hass and his fiance is Crystal McDonald. Proud of him are his brothers Trenton Hass, Brandon Soto, Cody Foshee, and Hunter Wagstaff. He is the grandson of Robert and Gina Bush, and Doug and Linda Hass.
Barbee leaves Saturday for his first duty station in Hawaii.
His family is very proud of him and this accomplishment. His brothers Trenton and Cody were unable to attend his graduation due to their previous commitment to Tenaha football. Both played the game against Grapeland to honor him and the Tenaha Tigers won 49-0.
October 27, 2017 - Center Garden Club has a new community project that will focus on the beauty and wonders of nature by featuring Shelby County’s variety of plants. Biweekly, the club’s civic committee will choose a plant to feature as “One Wonder” among the many throughout Shelby County. The first selection is the large pyracantha (or firethorn) shrub located on the terrace at 303 Tenaha Street in Center, Texas, the home of Toni Crowley. Ms Crowley noted that the magnificent berries of the pyracantha (or firethorn), transition from yellow to orange to red in the fall and winter. As we should expect now, it is beautifully ablaze for all who pass by on Tenaha Street.
Center Garden Club meets at noon on the second Wednesday each month September through May and welcomes guests. Call Carolyn Bounds for further information (598-3414).

October 26, 2017 - The Shelbyville Band Boosters would like to thank the Farmers State Bank Cooking Team for purchasing and cooking all of the burgers and sausage on a stick for the October 20th pink out game against Joaquin. The food was delicious. Thank you Farmers State Bank for Supporting the Shelbyvillle Dragon boosters and students.

October 26, 2017 - Pine Grove Nursing Center announces the winners of their 1St Annual Chili Cook Off. The Golden Ladle award/1st place went to Jana Hagler and Edie Miller. 2nd place winner was Julie and Heath Harbison. The 3rd place winner was Kim Bridges and the People’s Choice award went to the Therapy Department of Pine Grove. Thank you to all the people that entered the cook off and for coming out to sample and visit with the residents. We had a great time!
We would also like to thank our judges, Renee’ Bridges with The Hope Medical Community Clinic, Keith Byndom, Chief of the Center Fire Department, City Councilman Jerry Lathan, and Joyce Lathan.
October 25, 2017 (More Photos) - The Joaquin Elementary corridors were opened Tuesday, October 24, 2017 with the Joaquin PTO inviting the community in for fun and games at their Annual Fall Carnival. Games included standard carnival entertainment with a Halloween twist such as a ring toss to witch hats and eyeball bounce into fish bowls with winners taking home a goldfish. Kids also enjoyed Toilet Paper Toss, Frisbee Toss, Bean Bag Toss, Cake Walk, Ring Toss, photo booth, and more.
October 24, 2017 - Shelby County Memorial VFW Post 8904, the Auxiliary and the Shelby County Historical Society have joined forces to honor the service and sacrifice of Shelby County Veterans of World War I in this Centennial year. To date 900 veterans from the county and those not native but now buried here have been identified.
November 11, 2018 will mark the 100th year of the end of World War I and from now until then the Shelby County Museum, 230 Pecan Street, Center will be featuring an exhibit of WW I items. We are asking help from the public to loan items for display during this time. We now have uniforms from the families of Gail Sholar and Verona McSwain. Anything you can contribute would be most appreciated and well taken care of.
Items can be taken by the museum from 1 – 5 pm or Chief Imaging, 614 Tenaha Street 9a – 5p Monday through Friday. Questions please contact VFW 8904 Quartermaster Larry Hume at 598-2976 or the museum 598-3613.
October 24, 2017 - The Shelbyville Volunteer Fire Department is selling a limited number of tickets for their annual Raffle Fundraiser which includes a 2017 Honda 420 4-wheeler 4x4 with trailer. The trailer is donated by L & R Timber and Common Disposal.
The drawing will be held Friday, November 3, 2017 at the Shelbyville football game. Only 300 tickets will be sold for $50 each. The raffle also includes chances to win a Ruger 308 Bolt Action donated by Shelby Savings Bank; a 50" Flat Screen TV; and three (3) drawings for $100 Visa Gift Cards. All together tickets have six chances to win.
The 4-wheeler winner will be responsible for 4-wheeler and trailer tax, title, and license. Gun winner will need to pass a background check.
Contact any Shelbyville Volunteer fireman for tickets and tickets will be for sale at Shelbyville football games played at home.
Be sure to support your local fire department! Funds raised help cover operating expenses of our volunteer fire department.
October 23, 2017 - I’m excited to announce that I am running for Center Independent School District School Board.
I have been married to my husband, Brad, for over 19 years. We have 3 wonderful sons. We have Dylan a 17-year-old Senior at Center High School, Zachary a 14-year-old Freshman at Center High School and Brannon an 11-year-old 6th grader at Center Middle School.
I am a member of New Life Church in Center, Texas.
I am very involved in every program my boys are a part of though Center ISD such as Special Education, 504 Program, JCC, BETA, National Honor Society, Band, Football, Baseball, Tennis, Powerlifting.
I have been on Campus Improvement Committees in the past years which has come up with plans to make the campuses better for our students. I was also a substitute teacher for a few years, mainly at F.L. Moffett.
The only promise I will make is to do the best I can in all decisions to make Center ISD better for our students.
Early voting will be at the Shelby County Clerk’s Office, 124 Austin Street, Center, Texas starting on October 23rd through November 3rd between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays only. The Election Day is November 7th with polls open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

October 23, 2017 - Holiday Nursing Center announces the winners of their Annual Chili Cook Off held October 19, 2017.
Marlene Williams, Holiday's Business Office Manager, won 1st place with her Chicken and White Bean Chili. Kimberly Owens from Harbor Hospice captured 2nd place and 3rd place was won by Amy Atchison, Holiday's Treatment Nurse.
Holiday Nursing Center would like to thank Shelby County Cruisers for coming out with their beautiful cars, Affinity Hospice, Kimberly with Harbor Hospice, Hillcrest Baptist Church, and the wonderful staff at Holiday!
