(Editor's Note: Due to the effect of COVID-19 on all activities locally and around the globe, we are re-running the 2017 article covering VFW Post 8904s Kosovo Remembrance Ceremony. With increased calls for social distancing to help prevent the spread of this virus, the event which would have occurred on March 24, 2020 was cancelled this year. However, if each of us take a moment to remember, they are never forgotten.)

March 28, 2017 - VFW Post 8904 and Auxiliary hosted a Kosovo remembrance at the Shelby County Veteran's Memorial on the Center square Friday, March 24, 2017.

The program was opened by Larry Hume, Quartermaster, followed by a prayer given by Cynthia Islas, Chaplain.

"Eighteen years ago on March 24, 1999 NATO launched an air campaign called Operation Allied Force, to halt the humanitarian devastation that was then unfolding in Kosovo, and the decision to intervene followed more than a year of fighting within that province and the failure of international efforts to resolve the conflict by diplomatic means," said Hume.

Hume stated, NATO announced the suspension of the air campaign on June 10, 1999 once it had concluded a military technical agreement with the federal republic of Yugoslavia. NATO casualties were light and the alliance suffered no fatalities as a result of  combat operations.

"However, two American Army helicopter pilots Chief Warrant Officer David Gibbs and Kevin Riker died when their helicopter crashed in the early morning hours May 5, 1999," said Hume. "The crash was not due to enemy fire, but two of America's finest died on that day serving our country."

In remembrance, a memorial wreath was hung on the Shelby County Veteran's Memorial by Leigh Porterfield whose sister served in Kosovo.

March 22, 2020 - Although the PWPS was unable to hold their regular monthly meeting this past Saturday, the monthly challenge "Baby It's Cold Outside" was viewed online via Flickr and voted by members for their favorites. They provide learning workshops and challenges each month to members and visitors alike.

March 9, 2020 - Twenty-one years ago, on March 24, 1999 NATO launched an air campaign called Operation Allied Force to halt the humanitarian devastation that was then unfolding in Kosovo. The decision to intervene followed more than a year of fighting within the province and the failure of international efforts to resolve the conflict by diplomatic means.

NATO announced the suspension of the air campaign on June 10, 1999 once it had concluded a military technical agreement with the federal republic of Yugoslavia. NATO casualties were light, and the alliance suffered no fatalities as a result of combat operations.

Update: Governor Gregg Abbott issued an order on March 22, 2020 which directed all licensed health care professionals and facilities to postpone all surgeries and procedures that are not immediately, medically necessary to correct a serious medical condition or to preserve the life of a patient who without immediate performance of the surgery or procedure would be at risk for serious adverse medical consequences or death, as determined by the patient’s physician. The order will remain in effect until 11:59pm on April 21st unless it is changed or rescinded by the Governor.

March 18, 2020 - Dr. Kyle Coffin’s dental office has rescheduled all non-essential appointments and will be closed until April 21st per the recommendations of the American Dental Association.

Dr. Coffin would like to thank everyone for their understanding during this time and wants to assure his patients that he is still available for limited emergency situations. His emergency number, which you can call or text, is available via the office voicemail and he is also available for contact through the office Facebook page.

The office phone number is 936-598-6181. Non-urgent messages can be left on the office voicemail and will be checked periodically.

March 18, 2020 - We at HOPE Community Medicine would like the public to know that we are seeing all patients at our clinics. We do have protocols in place to insure the safety of all patients. We ask that if you have an active temperature above 99.8 that you call our office first to receive instructions on how to proceed next. You will be asked some questions about your illness and recent travel history. We will then determine what precautions and testing need to occur next, to insure you are treated correctly, and with the upmost safety to yourself and others.

Please be patient as we are in daily communication with the CDC and the Texas Department of Health and protocols for testing and treatment may change as this current crisis unfolds. If you have severe difficulty breathing or are in serious distress please go straight to the Emergency Room. Thank you for your cooperation and patience during this time of uncertainty.
