“The Broken Pencil” by Doug Fincher

December 26, 2017 - The year 1939 was a particularly memorable year for me. I was six years old, and waiting for my first pair of shoes. Mother couldn’t buy my shoes but did buy my brother Bill and me a Big Chief Writing Tablet and an Eberhard #2 pencil.

Bill and I literally bounced on our way to school that day but as we entered the hallway, Bill suddenly hollered, “My pencil! I’ve lost my pencil!” Then he broke mine in half and took the half with the eraser on it! When Mrs. Stanley let us sharpen our pencils that day, no one had one like mine….. a pencil that could write with either end!

Eyeing me intensely one day, Bill asked, “Hey Doug, do you remember the time we broke your pencil and I took your eraser?” “I guess I suckered you that day”, he laughed. “Oh, I didn’t mind, I replied.”

“Erasers are for people who can’t get it right the first time!”
