“A Friend's Story About The Little Rock Inn” by Jack Fontaine

October 23, 2018 - Doug Fincher received this letter from Jack Fontaine (a lifetime friend) who also remembers The little Rock Inn.

Old Friend Henry,

I would like to share with you my memories of the Little Rock Inn during our time in Center Grammar School. Jerry and I brought our paper sack lunch almost every day. We took it over to the Inn to eat at the tables in the back and maybe buy a coke (a generic term for all soft drinks) to go with it. I believe that Mr. Napier was a World War I veteran as I remember he had an old German helmet hanging upside down on his porch for use as a flower planter. Mr. Napier would put Coca Cola bottles in his ice cream freezer, and would sell them for a dime and provide an old twisted coat hanger to jiggle the frozen Coke out.

I remember one day a kid, whose name I can't remember, brought a couple of fried chocolate pies to the Inn, and I traded my cheese sandwich for one of the pies--the best deal I ever made as the pie was delicious!

I don't think I ever bought a hamburger at the Inn, as if my memory serves me right, the meat patty was the size of a silver dollar inside a regular size bun!

You know, Henry, those memories are getting to be 80 years old, but they still remain, and I cherish all those years we spent together at the Center schools.

Jack
