Bears Hand Bulldogs Second Loss with 35-23 State Quarterfinal Football Win

The Timpson Bears varsity football team has moved forward in the Texas UIL Football Playoffs with a 35-23 state quarterfinal win over the Garrison Bulldogs at Stephen F. Austin State University on Friday. Timpson now stands at 14-0 and they will face Ganado High School next week in the Semifinal round. Garrison’s season ends with a 12-2 record and both losses came against Timpson.

Timpson scored first when senior quarterback Terry Bussey broke loose for a 36-yard touchdown with 4:32 minutes left in the first quarter of play. Senior kicker Tyler Lane added an extra point kick and THS led 7-0.

With 10:09 remaining in the second period Garrison got on the scoreboard when senior quarterback Brayden Davidson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run which capped a 67-yard Bulldogs drive. Freshman kicker JT Reagan added an extra point kick which tied the game at 7-7.

Bussey found Bears senior wideout Shahed Cross for a 53-yard touchdown reception with just 8 seconds remaining in the first half. Another Lane extra point kick gave Timpson a 14-7 lead at the halftime intermission.

A 30-yard Bulldogs field goal by Reagan cut the Bears lead to 14-10 with 7:42 left in the third stanza. Bussey broke free for a 12-yard Bears score with 2:45 left in the third quarter and Lane booted another point after to give THS a 21-10 advantage.

Bussey added another score to his resume when he scored from 8 yards out with 11:18 left in the final quarter. Lane booted the extra point which gave the Bears a 28-10 lead. Garrison answered with a touchdown run by junior runningback Avery Yarbrough with 8:46 left in the game Garrison trailed Timpson 28-16.

Senior Bears linebacker Baylor Kimbro intercepted a Bulldogs pass at the GHS 40-yardline with 2:50 left and Bussey wasted no time as he weaved through Bulldogs defenders for a 35-yard score with 1:55 left in the contest to help give Timpson a 35-16 advantage.

Garrison scored the games’ final touchdown when Davidson hit senior receiver Jachristopher Shepherd for an 8-yard touchdown reception with just 1:19 left in the game. Reagan added the extra point kick and the Bears won 35-23 after controlling the clock for the remainder of the game.
