Brandon’s “Shot Shorts” by Doug Fincher

November 27, 2017 - When we caught wild hogs in our garden again recently, a quick blast from my rifle sent them stampeding wildly back into the woods. Later that evening, Pam called me to our backyard clothes line. “Look at Brandon’s new underwear, she gasped. “There’s a hole in them…how could that have happened?” It didn’t take long to figure out that I had shot through his pair of shorts when I plugged the hog.

Later Brandon (a 4th grader) walked in with his discarded underwear in his hand and asked why we threw them away. “I like ‘em like they are”, he said. The next day he wore them to school (under his jeans, of course) and from that day on, the “shot shorts” were his favorite shorts.

We were talking to Brandon yesterday (now 37 years old) and asked if he remembered his shot underwear. “I sure do”, he laughed. “I’m just glad I wasn’t wearing them when they got shot”. “I hope the government doesn’t find out what happened that day”, he mused. “They might take away our guns …or make it illegal to shoot hogs near clothes lines”.

I tried to blame my rifle (or the hogs) for that hole in Brandon’s shorts….. until I suddenly remembered that it was I ….

……..who pulled the trigger.
