BU 59 North Timberland Scheduled for Closure

September 22, 2016 – BU 59 at the A&NR Railroad Bridge is scheduled for closure Saturday and Sunday in order for workers to dismantle and remove the temporary railroad bridge, weather permitting.

Work is complete on the newly constructed permanent railroad bridge and Austin Bridge and Road Services, contractors for the $11.4 million project, will remove the temporary bridge and continue the BU 59/North roadway portion of the Timberland Drive construction project. In addition to a 17-foot clearance beneath the new bridge, the construction project includes a widened roadway, a raised center median and sidewalks.

“Our contractors have tried to schedule this work several times but the weather made it impossible and they needed to wait until the ground was dry enough to dismantle the bridge. We are hoping the weather holds so they can move forward with it this weekend,” said Rhonda Oaks, Lufkin District public information officer. “This construction project will benefit motorists as well as train traffic and we are proud to see how it is shaping up.”

BU 59 will be open to traffic on Monday. Motorists are advised to reduce speed through the area and obey all signage, including the four-way flashing stoplights near the construction site. The project is expected to be completed this Fall, weather permitting.
