Candidates Speak at JVFD Fundraiser; Event Gains Around $9,000

January 28, 2024 - (Photo Album) - The Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department (JVFD) held a “Meet the Candidates” event at the Joaquin ISD school cafeteria on Saturday, January 27, 2024.

Stephen Ewing, JVFD Training Officer, introduced the candidates for the event and after each spoke, baked goods were auctioned by auctioneer Taylor Buster to help raise funds for the JVFD.

Present to speak in alphabetical order were Constable Precinct 3 candidates Scott Burkhalter, Roy Cheatwood (incumbent), and Fern Thomas Jernigan; Commissioner Precinct 3 candidates David Cheatwood, and Stevie Smith (incumbent); County attorney candidate John Price (incumbent); District Attorney Karren Price (incumbent); 123rd Judicial District Judge Leann Kay Rafferty (incumbent); Sheriff candidates Willis Blackwell, Gerald Corbell and Jimmy Faulkner.

Although not present, those who had speakers by proxy included Joann Shofner represented by Ronald Lott, Travis Clardy represented by Karren Price, as well as John Devine and Michelle Slaughter represented by Mary Hovey.

Those from the community in attendance had the opportunity to hear from each candidate and the result of the auction earned the fire department around $9,000 through the generous contributions of the community and candidates that were represented there.
