Center’s Girl’s, Boy’s Basketball Teams Take District 17 Wins

Center High School’s Girls, and Boys varsity basketball teams each won District 17- 4A games at home on Tuesday.

The Lady Roughriders took a 59-36 win over the Henderson Lady Lions. After jumping out to a 9-0 point lead midway through the first period, CHS led 14-6 by the end of the first quarter. The Lady ‘Riders led 18-11 halfway through the second period and they took a 27-20 advantage into the locker room at the midway break. By the end of the third stanza, CHS held a 42-29 lead going into the final quarter. Lanaijha May Johnson led the Lady ‘Riders with 24 points, ad teammate Gabby Whisenant scored 11. Henderson was led by Kyeshia Clater with 24. The win gives the Lady Roughriders an 16-7 overall win-loss record and a 4-1 conference mark.

The Roughriders boys team took a 72-49 win in the final game of the night. They jumped out to an early 8-0 point lead and never trailed during the contest. The ‘Riders held a 28-11 lead at the end of the first period, a 44-27 advantage at halftime and a 63-40 lead going into the final frame. The win gives CHS a 12-8 overall record and a 3-1 mark in District 17 conference play. The Roughriders were led by Emonte Cash Cross with 25 points. Teammates, Tim Johnson scored 12, and Jimmarion Ja Smith had 11 points on the day.

Center will head to Kilgore Bulldogs Gymnasium on Friday, January 12, 2024 where girls varsity action will tip off at 6 p.m. and boys varsity play will follow.
