Center Middle School 7th Annual College/Educational Tour

March 7, 2024 - This past weekend My Sister Myself, an organization of 8th grade girls at Center Middle School, spent the weekend in Seabrook Texas after initially touring SFA University in Nacogdoches on Friday Morning. Dr. Sharon Rice, a professor with SFA and a former educator with CMS,  has extended a warm greeting to this group of young ladies and their sponsors for the past 4 years which always include a free Starbucks drink.   The girls take a tour of the campus, visiting the library, Rec Center, Student Center and other buildings, even getting the chance to watch a sand volleyball tournament.  They are given vital information about the application process as well as types of financial aid available to them when they are starting to plan for college in their junior year of high school. It's always exciting to watch the girls as they tour a college campus and dream of being a part of that college life one day.

After the tour, the girls then traveled on to Houston where they worked a 3 hour shift at the  Houston Food Bank, the largest food bank in the country. This is our 6th year working at the Food Bank.

On Saturday they visited Moody Gardens and went to the Rainforest, Discovery Museum and took a 45 minute paddle boat tour around the Galveston Marina.   Afterwards they took a stroll on the historic Galveston Island's Strand, sightseeing, buying souvenirs and watching the enormous cruise ships board excited passengers preparing for a cruise.  On Sunday morning the weekend concluded with what has become our annual starship tour to NASA Johnson Space Center and then lunch at CiCi's Pizza before loading the bus for the long trip home. There were also some lighthearted moments along the way with the girls visiting Baybrook Mall, shopping and swimming in the Hotel swimming pool.  Always so much fun.

This group of young ladies were commended for their conduct and pleasantries by the hotel's owner and management. This year's trip was made possible thanks in part once again to our generous citizens of Shelby County donating to 1 or both of the 2 roadblocks we had on the square in November and February. These are our only fundraising efforts. Shelby County YOU ROCK!

There are some other very special patrons who deserve our recognition and appreciation also for going above and beyond to make each girl's trip a memorable one.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts: Ashley Wulf, Sommer Herndon, Jennifer Tomlin, Officer Jimmy Mathews, Jessica Gurley, Gladys Bailey Andrews, Stephanie Glenn, Nora Harrington, James Anding and Alvin Davis, Sr.

Already looking forward to next year.  If you would like any information about this organization, please feel free to contact Mrs. April Bloys or Mrs. Anita Williams at Center Middle School.
