Commissioners Agree to Trial Run of Deputy Constable in Precinct 3

September 18, 2018 - The Shelby County Commissioners voted to approve the addition of a reserve deputy to the Shelby County Precinct 3 Constable's office during their September 12, 2018 meeting and Charles Barr, Precinct 3 Commissioner, suggested opinions varied.

Barr remarked he has received a lot of phone calls in reference to the addition of a reserve deputy to the office of the constable.

"It's been about 50/50, that's just about the way it is. Some want it, some don't want it, I hope it's not based on politics. I really don't know what some of the things are based on," said Barr. "What I would like to see happen would to have a, maybe set up a grace period for three months, three-and-a-half months till the end of the year and give y'all an opportunity to sell this to us."

There was some confusion during the meeting if Barr meant to postpone the entire proposal for three months. County Judge Allison Harbison clarified, Barr was suggesting having the reserve officer work with Roy Cheatwood on a three month time period and then revisit the situation in three months to see how well it's working.

"I'm not trying to make everybody happy, I want to do what's best for our precinct and our county. Since it's brand new to us, let's try it and see how it works," said Barr. "If it works fine, then we can continue."

A motion carried to approve the deputy constable on a trial basis until the first of the year.
