David’s Daily Devotion for May 7

May 7, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, May 7.

We continue today with our series on mothers in the Bible, as we approach Mother's Day. This morning our focus is on a woman, like yesterday's character, Jochebed, who receives very little notice in scripture, but who made a big impact on the kingdom of God. Jochebed gave the world Moses. Today we look at Eunice, who gave us Timothy.

In 2 Timothy 1:5, the Apostle Paul writes, "I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother, Lois, and your mother, Eunice, and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well." Christian faith can't be passed down from one generation to another, like an inheritance, or a genetic trait. But godly mothers certainly play a significant role in the "training up" of children.

Eunice and Lois were Jews, but the Word tells us that Eunice was married to a Greek, a Gentile. We assume that he was an unbeliever. Marriages like that are challenging, particularly when it comes to raising children. But the Bible tells us that Timothy was "well acquainted with the sacred writings." So, Eunice, despite her challenges, took great care with her son's spiritual upbringing.

Eunice is given just a few small mentions in the New Testament. But her son became a protege of Paul, and the pastor of the great church in Ephesus. He made a difference, and so did she. And just about every church that I've served in has had a women's Sunday School group called... The Eunice Class. A fitting legacy for a faithful woman, for a faithful mother.

Meet you back here tomorrow,
