David’s Daily Devotion for May 9

May 9, 2024 - Good Morning!  It's Thursday, May 9.

We continue with "Mom Week" here at Daily Devotions.  Everyday we're looking at a different mother from the Bible, as we approach Mother's Day Sunday.  Here's a quiz for you.  List five mothers from God's Word.  Go ahead . . . I'll wait.

Ok - who did you come up with?  Maybe Eve or Sarah or Hannah or Elizabeth?  Well, I'm going to wager that one of the women on your list was Mary, the mother of Jesus.  But she really wasn't a woman at all - she was just a girl.  In 2020 the average age for a woman to begin having children was 25.  In the 1970's it was 20.  Your grandmother probably had her first baby in her late teens.

In the first century Jewish world, a girl could be betrothed one month after her 12th birthday.  The betrothal period usually lasted at least a year before the marriage became official.  And so, Mary of Bethlehem, could have been 14 years old.  She was a young girl with an old soul, a mature spirit, a servant's heart.  And in Luke 1:46 we find the lyrics to a song that she sang.  It's known by the Latin word for "magnify" - The Magnificat.  Here are Mary's words.

My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
For He has been mindful of the humble state of his servant
And from now on, all generations will call me blessed
For the Mighty One has done great things for me
Holy is His name!

A young girl with an old soul, a mature spirit, a servant's heart.  The heart of a mother.

Meet you back here tomorrow,

Bro. David
