Dove Hunt Set Sept. 3 in Sabine National Forest

August 19, 2016 - The Sabine National Forest and the National Wild Turkey Federation are hosting the annual Families Afield Day dove hunt September 3.

The event, from 8 a.m. until noon, is located six miles east of Shelbyville on FM 417 in a flagged field on the south side of the road. Required hunter orientation will begin at 8 a.m.

The dove hunt is part of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s JAKES Program and is open to participants from 8 to 17 years old accompanied by an adult 18 years or older with a hunting license. Applicants must have a valid Texas hunting license and have attended State Hunters Education class.

Entry fee is $10 for non-JAKES members and participants are required to wear hunter orange vest or hat and eye protection such as sunglasses. Participants should also bring their own food, water, chair, shotgun and shells (shot size 7.5-9).
