DPS Troopers Investigate Fatal Crash on U.S. 96

November 11, 2018 - Emergency personnel were dispatched to U.S. Highway 96 South early Sunday, November 11, 2018 for a two-vehicle fatal crash.

When Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper arrived at the scene just over one mile north of the San Augustine County line, it was determined the driver of a passenger car involved in the crash had lost his life.

Jackie Kirkwood, Justice of the Peace Precinct 4, pronounced Marquis Musco, 23, of Shreveport deceased and Mangum Funerall Home transported him from the scene. Center Fire Department firemen assisted in extricating Musco from the vehicle.

According to a press release issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety, the preliminary crash investigation indicates at approximately 6am, a white 2011 Buick passenger car driven by Musco, was traveling south on US 96.

For unknown reasons the Buick crossed over the center of the roadway and into the northbound lanes, where it was struck by a blue 2017 Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer owned by SCL Inc. of Shelbyville and driven by John Cooper, 26, of Mansfield, LA.

Cooper was transported to Nacogdoches Medical Center - Shelby Emergency Department where he was treated and released.

The crash was investigated by Texas DPS Troopers Brent Murray, Keith Jones and Cpl. Jimmy Faulkner. 

DPS reports this crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.

Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies assisted with traffic control at the scene along with firemen.
