Dragons Beat Wolves in home Conference Showdown

The Shelbyville Dragons varsity basketball team beat the visiting San Augustine Wolves by a 77-47 score on Tuesday. The Dragons are now 5-0 in District 22 Class 2A play and they are boasting a 23-2 overall record for the season.

Nine first-quarter points by Jordan Boykins helped the Dragon gain a 16-12 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Five steals and five buckets by Dragons points guard Jay Buckley helped the Dragons gain a 34-24 lead by the halftime intermission.

Shelbyville exploded to outscore San Augustine 24-6 in the third period and the Dragons led 61-30 going into the final quarter.

Shelbyville Head Coach David Schmidt emptied the bench in the final stanza but San Augustine made up little ground and took the 77-47, 30-points win.

Jay Buckley had 28 points during the game and led all scorers from both teams. Cole Ferguson and fellow Dragon Jordan Boykins each had 14 points each. Jakevion Calhoun had nine points. Keyshawn McCollister scored four. Four Dragons had two points each, Kutrick Allen, H’Leighen McClelland, Caleb Campbell, and Kolby Parker.

High scorer for San Augustine were JD Holman with 12 points.

The Dragons are looking to return to the Class 2A Texas State Basketball Tournament after going 32-4 last season before falling to Stinnett West Texas in the semifinal round. Stinnett High School eventually defeated Thorndale in the title game for the Class 2A crown.
