Dragons Defeat Pirates for First Conference Win

Shelbyville Dragons Stadium, October 12, 2018 –

The Shelbyville Dragon’s Varsity Football team won their first District 12 2A-1 home game of the season on Friday, over the Deweyville Pirates, by a 34-26 score. Shelbyville’s overall record now stands at 2-4. Deweyville has a 3-3 overall mark and they are now 0-1 in conference action.

Both teams exchanged fumbles early and Deweyville scored first when Lance Wilhelm found the endzone on an 18-yard touchdown run with 2:33 left in the first quarter. The Pirate’s extra point conversion run attempt was no good and Deweyville led 6-0 early in the game.

A 39-yard LD Coleman kickoff return gave Shelbyville good field position to starter their next drive. Dragon runningback Jaylon Brinson scored on a weaving 35-yard touchdown run which tied the game at 6-6 with 2:14 left in the opening frame. The Dragons extra point conversion try was picked off and this score held up for the remainder of the first quarter.

Pirate runningback Dillon Fears gave the Deweyville squad a 12-6 lead with 3:11 left in the second period when he made a 5-yard run which capped an 88-yard Deweyville offensive drive. An excellent tackle by Dragon AJ Cartwright quelled the Pirate’s 2-point conversion attempt.

Sophomore running back Trace Jackson scored the final touchdown of the first half on an 8-yard run which tied the game 12-12 just before the midway break.

Brinson scored touchdowns from 61-yards and 7-yards out by the midway point of the third period to give Shelbyville a 26-12 lead with 4:19 left in the third stanza.

Pirate Kevin Gordon scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:48 left in the third frame to cut the Dragon’s lead to 26-18. This was the score at the conclusion of the third period.

Slade Smith extended the Shelbyville lead to 32-18 with a 15-yard touchdown run with 8:52 left in the contest. Brinson added a 2-point conversion run to give the Dragon’s a 34-18 lead.

Kevin Gordon hit Tanner Breaux for a Pirate’s touchdown, from 2-yards away, with 4:03 left in the game. The Pirate’s added a 2-point conversion to cut the Dragon’s final lead to 34-26

Shelbyville rushed 29 times for 363 yards and went 0 for 2 attempts passing. They lost four fumbles during the game. The Dragons gained 13 first downs and were penalized four times for 40 yards.

Deweyville rushed 31 times for 245 yards. They completed 2 of three passing attempts for 22 yards. They gained 10 first downs and had a fumble and an interception. The Pirates were penalized three times for 20 yards.

Shelbyville will host the West Sabine Tigers on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 7 p.m. for their second conference game of District 12 Class 2A1 competition.
