Dragons Take 4-3 District 23 Win over Bobcats

The Shelbyville Dragons varsity baseball team took a narrow 4-3 run home win over the visiting Gary Bobcats on Thursday. The game was close throughout and had four lead changes with the Dragons getting the win in walkoff fashion in the bottom of the final seventh inning.

Dylan Parker capitalized on a Bobcat outfielder’s error to get on second base in the bottom of the first inning. A sacrifice bunt by teammate Hunter Harvey put Parker at third base with just one out. Parker scored to give SHS a 1-0 lead when Wyatt Frick doubled to rightfield.

In the top of the second inning Bobcat Ben Stephens singled to leftfield and later scored on a Dragon error to tie the game at 1-1. Dylan Parker gave the Dragons their next lead when he doubled to leftfield to begin the bottom of the third inning and scored later on a Bobcat error. The Dragons led 2-1 until the Bobcats scored two runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead of the Dragons 3-2.

Weston Frick led off the bottom of the fourth frame drawing a walk and he was moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt by teammate DJ Barnes. He scored moments later on a Jason Fleming single to centerfield. This tied the game at 3-3. With the game still tied at 3-all in the bottom of the seventh inning, Gus Duvon made it to first base on a Bobcat’s error, and later scored the winning run on a single by Dylan Parker, giving the Dragons the 4-3 win. The win puts Shelbyville’s overall record at 14-3 and their District 23 2A mark at 8-0 with four conference games remaining in the regular season. Gary is at 14-3-1 and 7-2 in district.

Dragon Parker struck out 8 batters and walked four in 6 2/3 innings, giving up just two hits. Dallas Murray pitched the final out, allowing no hits, and he walked two batsmen. Gary’s Kohl Woodfin struck out 6 and walked four in the complete game loss. He allowed 5 hits.

The Dragons will next travel to theGary Bobcats Ballpark on Friday, April 12, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. to continue District 23 play.
