DRT Celebrates Mirabeau Lamar Day with Donation

January 27, 2018 - The William Carroll Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas is proud to celebrate January 26 as Mirabeau Lamar Day.

Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, born in 1798 in Georgia, became the second President of the Republic of Texas, serving from 1838 to 1841. During his administration the Congress granted each of the existing 23 counties four leagues of land to be used for education and set aside fifty leagues of land for the development of a university, earning Lamar the title "Father of Texas education."

On Mirabeau Lamar Day, members of the William Carroll Crawford Chapter; Merle Howard, Elizabeth Pate, Maggie Casto and Vickie Martin presented Sandra Davis, the Fannie Brown Booth librarian with a copy of "Mirabeau Lamar: Second President of Texas" for the library's children's section.
