DRT Shares Texas History Celebration During March Meeting

April 6, 2017 - March is officially Texas History Month for the state of Texas and the William Carroll Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas took their March meeting to share the celebration with the public.

March 2 is Texas Flag Day and members of Boy Scout Troop 119, the JJE Gibson Chapter of the Children of the Republic of Texas and the Gateway to Texas Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas joined the DRT chapter to retire worn, faded and torn flags and tell the story of these banners. With members of the SRT chapter separating the sections of the Texas flag and retiring the colors to the flame, members of the CRT chapter told of the meaning of the colors and symbolism of the flag. The Boy Scout Troop joined in retiring the US flags while the CRT chapter shared the meaning and symbolism of the Stars and Stripes.

March 2, 1836 is Texas Independence Day. On this date the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed by Sam Houston and 58 other representatives in a large unfinished blacksmith shop at Washington-on-the-Brazos and the struggle for independence from Mexico began.

The program concluded with the stories of the March 6 Alamo Heroes Day and the March 27 Goliad Heroes Day and an invitation to return next year to what is planned to become an annual event.
