Forest Service Seeks Applicants for Recreation Advisory Committee

October 3, 2023 – The USDA Forest Service is seeking nominations to fill 11 positions on the Southern Region Recreation Resource Advisory Committee.

The committee is slated to meet once or twice a year to provide recommendations on recreation fees for national forests and grasslands in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and the territory of Puerto Rico.

Candidates are being recruited to represent one of the following recreation interests: camping, motorized recreation, non-motorized recreation, wildlife and nature viewing, visiting interpretive sites, hunting and fishing, environmental groups, outfitters and guides, state tourism, American Indian tribes or local government.

Nominees will be asked to provide information about their qualifications and background, as required by the Federal Advisory Committee Act.

Recreation RAC members serve a term of two or three years. Members do not receive compensation other than reimbursement for travel, food, and lodging costs incurred to attend regularly scheduled meetings.

Successful candidates will be recommended to the Regional Forester for appointment based on the following evaluation criteria:

  • What interest groups they represent and how they are qualified to represent that group.
  • Experience working with underserved populations, including people of color.
  • Why they want to serve on the committee and what they can contribute.
  • Their experience in working successfully as part of a collaborative group.

Once the advisory committee is seated, all Recreation RRAC meetings will be open to the public and include opportunities for public input.
