"Gil Frame and Daddy" by Doug Fincher

October 2, 2017 - A few years ago I was on my way to visit my parents in Center, Texas when I whizzed pass a State Trooper parked at the Mill Creek Bridge. I looked in my rear view mirror and I could see he’d spotted me, too.

Since I was speeding, I just pulled over and waited. As he looked at my driver’s license, he said, “Henry Fincher… are you any kin to Red Fincher?” When I told him he was my Dad, he handed my license back and said, “Son, I’m not giving you a ticket. Your Dad gave me a job when there weren’t any jobs.” “He was the hardest working man I ever knew.”

“Your Dad and I were working for Menefee Contractors one day when he fell from a drag line and was knocked unconscious. When he came to, he looked up at Mr. Menefee and said, ‘Don’t worry, Mr. Menefee… I aint gonna sue you. I just want a job.’”

Gil was right about my Dad. He worked hard to feed and clothe his ten children during the lean years following the Great Depression. He worked hard to help others, too…

…others like Trooper Gil Frame.
