Joaquin Derailed by Carlisle 47-33 in Area Playoff

The Carlisle Indian’s Gerald Turner ran for five touchdowns and threw for another, Indian’s teammate Louie Garza returned a fumble for a score and Carlisle eliminated the Joaquin Rams by a 47-33 score on Friday in a Class 2A Division I Region III area playoff game.

Turner finished with 208 yards rushing on 16 carries and also completed 9 of 12 passes for 224 yards and a score. Jay Price hauled in six of the passes for 205 yards and a touchdown.

Turner got the Indians (12-0) going with an 11-yard touchdown run just two minutes into the game, but Joaquin's Hunter Gates answered with a 9-yard score with 6:28 remaining to tie the game at 7-7.

That would be the first of 42 combined points between Turner and Gates in the opening quarter.

Turner had touchdown runs of seven, six and one yards to go with his 11-yard score, and Gates countered with a 70-yard scoring run to go with an 88-yard kickoff return.

Carlisle led 28-21 at the end of the first quarter.

Trenton Ramsey completed a 15-yard scoring pass to Lorenzo Lane was the game's only second quarter points and brought the Rams to within 27-28 at the midway break.

Joaquin gained their first lead in the third quarter when Ramsey connected with Connor Bragg on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 9:13 remaining in the frame.

However, it took one play and 12 seconds for Turner to answer when he dashed 77 yards to paydirt as he put Carlisle back up 34-33. The try for a two-point conversion was batted away.

Joaquin launched an offensive drive and drove the football inside the Carlisle 37-yard line on the Ram’s next drive. The Ram’s later fumbled and it was returned by Garza 68 yards for an Indian’s touchdown which gave Carlisle an eight-point lead with 6:04 remaining in the third quarter.

Turner found Price on a 58-yard Carlisle score with 9:32 in the contest for the final points of the contest.

Joaquin finished with 345 yards rushing on 49 carries. Gates led the way with 147 yards, and Bragg added 133. Bragg also caught two passes for 64 yards. Joaquin finishes the season with a 9-3 mark.

It was a big offensive night all around, with a combined 920 yards
