Judge Harbison Tribute to Bill Haley

July 11, 2022 - It is with great sadness that I write this tribute to Mr. Haley. I refer to him in that manner instead of Representative or Senator, because I had the privilege of being a student of his during his last years as a teacher at Center High School. He was my inspiration for pursuing public office.

My first political campaign was under his tutelage; I ran for Freshman Class Officer and he was our class sponsor. I did not win but his encouragement and words of wisdom have been a constant in my life. His advice was to be honest, to not promise things you can’t deliver, and stand by what you believe in….to treat people with respect and they will come to respect you; public service should be a calling, not just a job.

Shelby County is so honored to have been the home of this distinguished Statesman and Educator. An East Texas Gentleman who put others before himself, fighting for quality education for all Texas children. Bill will be greatly missed by his hometown of Center and he will be remembered as a true Champion of Education and one of Shelby County’s favorite sons.

As a Tribute, the flags at the County Courthouse will fly at half-mast Monday, July 11th and Tuesday, July 12th.

Sincerely,
Allison Harbison
Shelby County Judge
