Louisiana Man Dies in Two-Vehicle Crash on US 84

March 6, 2017 - A two-vehicle crash incident on U.S. Highway 84 in between Joaquin and Tenaha on Friday, March 3, 2017 has resulted in the death of a Louisiana man.

Emergency personnel from Tenaha Volunteer Fire Department and Joaquin VFD, as well as Timpson Volunteer Ambulance Service and ACE EMS were dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:20pm. Shelby County Sheriff's Deputies and and Constables from Precint 4 and 3 also were available at the scene. Traffic was diverted from the location on side roads west of the incident and east at FM 699 for several hours and was not clear until sometime after 10:30pm.

Texas Department of Public Safety State Trooper John Hallenbeck was dispatched to the scene to investigate, assisted by Trooper Justin Sikes.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) press release indicates a 2014 Kia Soul was stopped on SH 84 waiting to turn left into a private drive when it was struck from behind by a 2014 Kenworth truck tractor semi-trailer. After the initial collision, the truck tractor semi-trailer drove off the roadway to the right, overcorrected back to the left and subsequently overturned.

The driver of the Kia is identified as Baylee Brookshire, 17, from Logansport LA. Brookshire was reportedly transported to a hospital in Louisiana by private vehicle for precautionary measures.

The driver of the truck tractor semi-trailer was identified as Kenneth Wheeler, 61, from Sibley LA. Wheeler was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Margie Anderson at 6:15 p.m.

Watson & Sons Funeral home transported Wheeler from the scene.

This crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
