Operation Location Identification; Can Emergency Responders Find You?

Can you be found in an emergency?

October 24, 2017 - One challenge facing law enforcement, fire departments, and medical personnel when responding to a 9-1-1 call is being able to locate the address of the incident. Over the years, 9-1-1 addressing has improved the process of finding an address; however, when officers or ambulance personnel are searching for a location, it is very important for a physical address to be visible.

You can help emergency responders help you.

Is your street address number on your home or business property? If not, please post your assigned physical street address number right away.

In most cases when you dial 9-1-1, not including most cell phones, the address and/or phone number from where you’re calling is automatically displayed on the 9-1-1 call taker’s computer screen. The address shown is your physical address – that is, your house number and street name.

Your 9-1-1 address numbers should be posted and visible from the road so that emergency service agencies can easily find you in case of an emergency.

It is recommended for rural areas to have house numbers posted in contrasting colors and be a minimum of 5-inch numbers. In cities it is recommended the address be displayed with a minimum of 3-inch numbers. It's very important that the address be easy to read.

In an emergency, seconds can sometimes make a life-saving difference.

Make sure your 9-1-1 address numbers are posted on your house or business, and are easy to see from the road. A well-marked location is much easier for law enforcement officers, firefighters, and medical personnel to find when you need emergency help. You can get street numbers at most hardware and discount stores for a very reasonable price or you can even paint a sign. Don’t wait – post your 9-1-1 address today!
