Panola Fillies Finish 2-1 at Brookhaven

September 5, 2017 - This past weekend the Panola College Fillies traveled to Brookhaven College to face Iowa Western, Ranger College, and host Brookhaven.

The powerful offense of #3 Iowa Western took down Panola in 4 sets: 14-25, 20-25, 25-19, 19-25. After overcoming a slow start, the Fillies were able to battle to take the 3rd set and put up a fight in the fourth before the defending National Runner-Up pulled away to close out the match. Outside hitter Jaqueline da Silva led with 7 kills, while right side Melanie Casteel and middle blocker Barbara Sabino added 6 each. Sophomore setter Kinly Carter dished out 13 assists, with Cayman Sutton chipping in 12. Libero Camie Copeland notched 15 digs with da Silva adding 9.

In their second match of the day, Panola rebounded to beat Ranger College 25-16, 26-24, 25-23. Freshman outside Rebecca Rabius led with 11 kills  while hitting a stellar .526%, and middle Barbara Sabino added 6. Cayman Sutton recorded her season high in assists with 19 while Carter added 11. Defensively, Copeland led once again with 10 digs, and freshman outside Audrey Slaten added 5 of her own.

The Panola College offense picked up significantly Saturday with a sweep of Brookhaven College: 25-16, 25-13, 25-11. Barbara Sabino and freshman Alyssa Lozoya led with 8 kills apiece, and the duo of right sides (Melanie Casteel and Jasmine Sanchez) chipped in 6 kills each. Setter Molly Harris notched her season high in assists dishing out 20, and Kinly Carter added 12. Libero Hannah Ramirez led the floor defense with 9 digs, with Harris, Lozoya, Copeland, and Slaten all adding 4 respectively. Slaten also served up 3 key aces.

Panola will host Region XIV South rival San Jacinto Wednesday, September 6th, at 6pm in Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.
