The Joaquin Rams varsity football team struggled in the early going of Friday’s District 10 Class 2A-1 conference opener with the visiting Garrison High School’s Bulldogs. After the Bulldogs got a 36-yard field goal from Andy Marques and a 39-yard touchdown reception from Maxwell Gipson, GHS led 10-0 by the end of the first quarter.

Joaquin began to bounce back early in the second period as they scored on a 33-yard run to begin the second stanza. JHS recovered a fumble with 11:21 left in the first half. They trailed 10-8 at halftime.

Neither team was able to score during the third quarter. A 23-yard touchdown by Ram Andre Brown at the start of the fourth quarter pulled JHS ahead with their first lead at 14-10.

A bad snap mishandled on a punt gave Joaquin really good field position and they scored again with 9:07 left in the game on a Gauge Jordan 17-yard run. The Rams were ahead 20-10.

Garrison bounced back on a Kevin Page reception for a touchdown that pulled them to within 20-17 of the Rams late in the game.

Jordan intercepted a Garrison pass late and went 44-yards for the touchdown which allowed JHS to score the final 8 points with time expired.

Joaquin is now 5-0 and 1-0 in conference action. Garrison is 2-3 for this season and 0-1 in league play.

The Rams will travel to San Augustine for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff with the Wolves on Friday, October 9, 2020.
