Rams Defeat Dragons, Move Into Second Place

April 1, 2016 - The hometown Joaquin Rams varsity baseball team held on to shut out the Shelbyville Dragons by a 3-0 score last Tuesday. Rams pitcher Brock Lawson threw a complete game in the win which moved his team to 5-1 in District 23 2A play and gave JHS sole possession of second place in the conference. The Rams trail the undefeated Beckville Bearcats who boast a spotless 6-0 standing. Shelbyville falls to 4-2 and they are still in the playoff race and in third place.

The two teams face their final opponents of the first round of district competition with Joaquin traveling to Tenaha, on Friday, April 1 for a 4:30 pm game with the 2-4 Tigers. The Dragons head to Beckville, on April 8, to face the current conference leaders at 6 p.m., according to Maxpreps.

Tuesdays game saw the Rams and Dragons both scoreless for the first 4 1/2 innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning Kase Yates was able to reach base via a walk. He later scored on a squeeze-play on a Trey Wilkerson sacrifice bunt. The Rams took a 1-0 lead into the fifth inning.

RBI singles by Brock Lawson and Kase Yates, in the bottom of the fifth frame, allowed JHS scores from Cole Powdrill and Lawson to give the Rams what would eventually prove to be the final 3-0 margin of victory.
