Roughriders Hold on For 43-33 Win over Brownsboro

Center Roughriders’ Stadium, Friday October 6, 2018 –

The Center Roughriders’ varsity football team trailed the visiting Brownsboro Bears 7-0 at the end of the first quarter of Friday’s non-district home game. The Roughriders trailed 14-0 at the start of the second period, but were able to rebound for a 43-33 win by game’s end.

After the Bear’s second score, Marques Hall set the ‘Riders up with a good kickoff return near midfield. Center quarterback Jayden Hicks made the Bears pay by completing passes to Jakerrion Watson and Hollis Polk, Hicks eventually capped a 3-play 50-yard scoring drive with a 22-yard quarterback keeper run for the ‘Rider’s first score. Alexis Lopez added an extra point kick which cut Brownsboro’s 14-point lead to 14-7 with 8:47 minutes left in the first half.

The Bears scored another touchdown with 10:41 left in the third quarter when Saul Williams broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run. The Bears extra point kick failed and they led 20-7.

Centers’ Marques Hall got the Roughriders back in the game just moments later with an electrifying 62-yard dash for a touchdown with 10:18 left in the third stanza. Lopez added his second extra point kick and Brownboro’s lead was cut to 20-14.

The Bears capped a 6-play 75-yard scoring drive with another William’s touchdown run with 6:46 left in the third quarter. This gave BHS a 27-14 advantage.

Center answered with a 50-yard Keamodre Horace touchdown run less than one minute later. This cut the Brownsboro lead to six points at 27-21 with 5:56 left in the third frame.

Center tied the contest when Jakerrion Watson hauled in a 43-yard touchdown from Hicks with 10:54 left in the fourth quarter. A Lopez extra point kick gave CHS a narrow 28-27 advantage.

The Bears retook the lead with a touchdown run which gave BHS a 33-28 lead with 7:10 left in the game. Center answered with another Horace score, from 37 yards away. A 2-point conversion by Watson gave Center a 36-33 lead with just over 6 minutes left in the contest.

The Bears turned the ball over on downs after failing to convert on a 4-down-and-11 yards-to-go situation with 4:30 left in the contest. Hicks and the ‘Rider’s offense made the Bears pay as they mounted a 9-play scoring drive which ended with another completion for the final score of the game with just 20 seconds remaining. The 43-33win evened Center’s season record at 3-3. Brownsboro falls to 1-5 for the season.

Center rushed 22 times for 234 yards. They completed 6 of 16 passing attempts for 107 yards. They gained six first downs and were penalized 5 times for 50 yards. They had 1 fumble.

Brownsboro rushed 42 times for 335 yards. They completed 4 passes on 10 attempts for 57 yards. The Bears gained 15 first downs and were penalized 4 times for 35 yards. They were intercepted once and fumbled the ball twice.

Center will begin District 9 Class 4A play next Friday, October 12, 2018 when they travel to Tarkington High School for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff with the Longhorns. The ‘Horns are 2-4 and lost Friday to Hardin-Jefferson 28-0.
