SH 87 South Scene of School Bus, Vehicle Crash (Updated)

Update from TxDPS - At approximately 3:50 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) investigated a two vehicle crash on SH 87 involving a Shelbyville ISD school bus.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates a 2014 International school bus was stopped facing north on SH 87 with red lights activated and unloading students. A 2009 Pontiac passenger car traveling south on SH 87 reportedly crested a hill and attempted to stop but slid into the northbound lane and struck the front of the bus.

The driver of the bus is identified as Marla Denby, 54, from Shelbyville. The driver of the Pontiac is identified as Matthew Gamble, 16, also from Shelbyville. A passenger with Gamble was transported to a Center hospital for possible treatment.

This crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.


January 8, 2018 - State Highway 87 South was the scene of a two-vehicle bus versus passenger car incident Monday, January 8, 2017 at 3:50pm.

Just over a mile south of FM 147 a red Pontiac G8, which was traveling southbound, appeared to have crossed over into the northbound traffic lane and side skidded into the front end of a stopped Shelbyville ISD bus traveling northbound.

The Pontiac came to rest in the barrow ditch along a driveway, while the school bus remained in the northbound traffic lane.

School officials were at the location when emergency responders from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Shelby County Sheriff's Department, ACE EMS, and Shelbyville Volunteer Fire Department arrived. 

The passenger in the Pontiac was transported from the scene by ACE EMS for treatment of minor injury and for observation.

Students on the bus were safely transferred from one bus to another. Some students were picked up by parents.

Injuries to anyone on the school bus were not apparent at the crash location, and were not reported at this time. Texas DPS Troopers Jonathan Stinson and Taylor Busters are currently investigating the crash. They were assisted at the scene by Troopers Jimmy Faulkner and Keith Jones.
