Shelbyville Varsities Take Pair of District Wins over Joaquin

Both the Shelbyville Dragons, and the Lady Dragons, varsity basketball teams won District 22 Class 2A games at Joaquin High School on Tuesday. The Lady Dragons defeated the Lady Rams by a 44-27 score. The Dragons never trailed during boys action and took a 79-49 win to end the night’s action.

Girls varsity action started out close in the early going but Shelbyville got back-to-back 3-point shots from Alicia Gaitlin and Jakaitlon Bolton to help boost their advantage to 9-4. The Lady Dragons led 9-6 at the end of the first period and never trailed again during the contest. Shelbyville went on a 6-0 scoring run to start the second quarter and they led Joaquin 20-9 at halftime.

The Lady Dragons were able to extend their lead to 33-20 by the conclusion of the third period. They then outscored the Lady Rams 11-7 in the final period to extend their lead to 44-27 by the end of the contest.

Brooke Elliott led the Lady Dragons with 11 points, other Lady Dragons scoring were, Alicia Gaitlin 10, Jakaitlon Bolton 9, Jasmine Osby 7, Kiana Bennett 3, and Taniya Barnes 2.

Joaquin was led by Victoria Byrd 11, Riley Sherrod 8, Secoya Barnes 4, Kaylea Neal 2, and Lauren Garrett 2.

In varsity boys action Shelbyville got out on top 12-0 by the five minute mark of the first period. Lorenzo Lane ended the Dragons scoring run by sinking the Ram’s first bucket and a free-throw with 4:20 left in the opening period which cut the SHS lead to 12-3. The Dragons held a 23-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. Shelbyville outpaced Joaquin 24-11 during the second stanza and led 47-20 at the midway intermission.

Joaquin gained ground in the third period and outpaced Shelbyville with 22-18 points. This cut the Dragon’s lead to 23 points with the score at 65-42, Shelbyville’s advantage, going into the final frame.

The Dragons offense reignited during the fourth quarter and the Dragons outscored the Rams 14-7 during the final period to balloon their lead to 30 points at 79-49 for the final tally.

Jordan Boykins and Jay Buckley each had 19 points to lead the Dragons offense. Other Dragons in double figures were Jakevian Calhoun 12, Cole Ferguson 11, and Kolby Parker with 10.

The Dragons are now 28-2 for the season and are 10-0 in conference competition. The Dragon and Lady Dragons will host the Timpson Bears at Shelbyville Dragons Gymnasium on Friday, February 1, 2019, at 7 p.m. Sub-varsity play will begin at 4:30 p.m.

Joaquin was led by Lorenzo Lane with a game-high 22 points. Teammate Eleazar Huerta was also in double-figures with 13 points.

The Joaquin varsity teams will travel to Garrison High School next Friday, February 1, 2019, for a 7 p.m. conference matchup with the Bulldogs.
