Tenaha Competes at Timpson in District 23 Basketball

Tenaha High School competed in District 23 2A Girls and Boys varsity basketball competition at Timpson on Tuesday. The girl’s game saw the Tenaha Lady Tigers come out on top by a convincing 72-20 score and the boy’s game saw the Timpson Bears come from behind to gain their first lead of the contest in the final seconds and solidify a 65-61 win.

The Lady Tigers gained an early 6-2 advantage and led the Lady Bears 15-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Tenaha offense was impressive and they ballooned their lead to 24-10 with four minutes left in the second period and they led 42-13 at the halftime intermission. Tenaha had a comfortable 63-16 lead at the end of the third quarter on their way to the 72-20 title win. Tenaha finished the regular season with a 12-0 District 23 mark and a 30-5 regular season record. Timpson finished second in conference action with a 10-2 mark and they were 16-16 overall.

The Lady Tigers were led offensively by Kayanna Cox with 36 points, Kennedi Holmes scored 17 and I’Tyanna Dagley had 12. High point scorers for the Lady Bears were Ceale Kruse and Taylor Stewart with 6 points each. The schools will begin the Texas UIL Bi-District playoffs next week.

In the boys varsity game Tenaha gained an early 8-2 lead midway through the first period and led 16-5 by the end of the first quarter. They led the Bears 25-13 at the mid-point of the second stanza and the Tigers held a 28-19 lead at halftime. Tenaha held a 49-36 lead over the Bears at the end of the third period. Timpson scored the first ten points of the fourth period and they cut the Tenaha lead to four points by the middle of the final period at 53-49. Timpson took their first lead with just 50 seconds remaining in the game and they led 61-60. A free throw by Kamerion Ross tied the game with 26 seconds remaining but scores by Terry Bussey and Jackson Campbell gave the Bears the narrow four-point win. Timpson was led offensively by Terry Bussey with 25 points, Jackson Campbell had 21 and Tyler Lane scored ten points. Tenaha was led by Pooh Moore with 21, A’Vante Fredieu had 18 and Kamerion Ross scored 13.

The loss gives Tenaha a 11-12 overall record and a 4-6 District 23 2A mark with two games remaining. The Tigers will travel to Beckville Bearcats Gymnasium on Friday February 9, 2024 for a 6 p.m. tipoff with the Bearcats (21-6, 10-0). Timpson 9-6 overall and 7-4 in district play. They will host the Garrison Bulldogs (6-8 5-4) on Friday, February 9, at Bears Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
