Tenaha Falls to San Augustine 43-17 in Regional Playoff Final

Nacogdoches Golden Dragon Stadium, Thursday, December 6, 2018 –

The Tenaha Tigers Varsity Football Team was eliminated during the Class 2A Division I Regional Final/ State Quarterfinal round of the UIL playoffs with a 43-17 loss to the San Augustine Wolves. The game took place at Nacogdoches High School, a neutral site for the two teams. Tenahas’ season is now complete after they posted a 10-4 record for 2018. San Augustine moves on with a 13-2 standing thus far in the season.

The San Augustine Wolves opened up the game with a 6-play scoring drive which was capped with a 34-yard scoring run by sophomore running back Kevorion Barnes with 9:37 minutes left in the first quarter. The Wolves added an extra point kick to go ahead 7-0.

A bad snap on a punting attempt set Tenaha up in good field position, just inside San Augustine’s 10-yard line with 10 minutes left in the first half of play. Tenaha senior running back Jay Lloyd made good on a first down carry and bolted into the endzone for a 9-yard score with 6:07 left in the second quarter. A Christian Castillo extra point kick tied the game at 7-7.

Senior Tiger defensive back JaQualin Franks intercepted a Wolve’s pass at midfield with 5:40 left in the first half to give THS possession of the football. The Tigers mounted a 8-play drive which covered 51 yards and was capped with Lloyd’s second touchdown run with 2:03 left in the half. Castillo’s extra point gave Tenaha a 14-7 advantage.

Barnes wasted no time answering as he bolted 54 yards for a San Augustine score on first down with 1:54 left in the second period. San Augustine’s extra point kick attempt was no good and Tenaha held a narrow 14-13 lead at the halftime intermission.

Castillo gave Tenaha a 17-13 lead with 8:26 left in the third stanza when he added a 29-yard field goal. Moments later Castillo came up big again for the Tigers when the senior kicker made a huge tackle on the kickoff return which prevented a sure Wolves touchdown.

Franks recovered a Wolves fumble on the next San Augustine drive and Tenaha took possession on their own 36-yard line. The San Augustine defense stiffened and forced THS to turn the ball over on downs with 6 minutes left in the third frame.

Barnes wasted no time as he extended the Wolve’s lead to 21-17 with his third touchdown from 41 yards out. Teammate Tijay Thomas added a 98-yard score with 2:04 left in the third quarter to put the Wolves up 27-17.

Thomas added his second touchdown with just under six minutes left in the contest. DeMarquise Barnes added a 2-point conversion run and San Augustine took a 35-7 lead.

Barnes scored the final touchdown of the game, from 63-yards out. Thomas added a 2-point conversion which gave San Augustine the final 43-17 margin of victory.

Tenaha rushed the football 38 times for 242 yards. Tenaha passed 26 times, completing 14 passes for 137 yards. The Tigers were picked off twice and lost 1 fumble.

San Augustine went 0 for 3 passing attempts. They rushed 26 times for 404 yards. They lost 1 fumble and were intercepted once.

Tenaha gained 18 first downs, San Augustine gained nine. The Tigers were penalized 4 times for 30 yards. The Wolves were given 6 penalties for 45 yards.
