Tenaha Kindergarten Class' Butterflies Hatch

May 19, 2017 - The Tenaha Kindergarten class enjoyed a much anticipated event on Thursday, May 18th when their butterflies hatched!

The students had six caterpillars arrive in cups and over the course of the project the students fed and watched the little caterpillars grow until they changed into chrysalises. The students noticed exciting new changes every day.

When the caterpillars pupate or become chrysalises they spun a silk pad to attach themselves to the lid of the cup. The class was then able to remove the lid from the cup with the chrysalis attached and stand it on its Chrysalis Station stand.

The next step was watching the butterflies hatch and today the class got to observe them as they became more active on their second day as butterflies.

It typically takes 3 weeks to go from caterpillar to butterfly; however, the Tenaha class' caterpillars arrived the beginning of last week! The kindergartners had the environment just right for the caterpillars to undergo metamorphosis into beautiful butterflies in a two week time frame.
