Tenaha Takes Both Boy’s and Girl’s Conference Basketball Games at Joaquin

The Tenaha Tigers and Lady Tigers varsity basketball teams each took District 22 2A wins at neighboring Joaquin High School on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers first overcame a second half comeback and defeated the Lady Rams by a 47-35 score. The night’s finale saw the Tigers defeat the Rams by a lopsided 94-56 margin despite the Rams going on a 10-0 run near the start of the third quarter.

The Lady Tigers started varsity play by outpacing the Lady Rams 6-0 during the first period. In early second quarter action, Lady Tiger’s junior guard Kia Suell hit a 3-pointer which put Tenaha up 9-0. Joaquin’s freshman guard JJ Bass answered moments later with a 3-pointer which ended the Lady Rams scoring drought with 6:30 minutes left in the second quarter.

Later in the second frame, Lady Tiger junior forward Mya Giles hit two -3 pointers and a field goal to give THS a 19-3 advantage with just over two minutes left in the half. Joaquin Rams junior guard Riley Sherrod scored the last five points of the second period to pull her team closer but Tenaha eventually took a 19-8 lead into the midgame intermission.

Tenaha took a 15-point lead at 31-16 after Giles hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute left in the third stanza but Sherrod was able to hit two buckets for JHS before the buzzer ended the third period. Tenaha took a 31-20 lead into the final quarter.

The fourth period saw Joaquin’s Sherrod and Kennedy Stanley team up for a couple of scores each to give the Lady Rams a 7-0 run to start the period. This cut Tenaha’s lead to four points with a 31-27 score. This however proved to be as close as the game would get.

Tenaha eventually took the 47-35 win and moved their season record to 9-7. Their conference mark is now at 5-3. The Joaquin Lady Rams now are at 9-16 for this season and their league mark sits at 1-9.

Mya Giles led Tenaha with 17 points. Teammate Jasmine Dodd added 10 points to Tenaha’s tally.

Riley Sherrod led Joaquin with 16 points. Kennedy Stanley scored six points for the Lady Rams.

Eleazar Huerta hit a 3-pointer in the first minute of Tuesday’s boys varsity action which gave Joaquin what would prove to be their only lead of the game.  Tenaha’s senior wing Ja’Qualin Franks exploded for 29 first half points, and eventually put up a game-high 35 points to help THS outdistance the hometown Rams. Junior Tigers guard Hayden Jenkins helped the THS tally himself with 22 points for the day.

Tenaha took a 23-13 lead into the start of the second frame and they led 49-29 at halftime.

Joaquin went on a 10-run near the start of the third frame and cut a 20-point Tiger lead to 49-36 but the Tigers  went on a 21-point run which didn’t end till there was just 6:40 left in the final quarter. Tenaha outscored Joaquin 22-19 in the fourth quarter to take the 94-56 win.

Eleazar Huerta led the Rams offensive with 26 points. Teammate Lorenza Lane chipped in 13 points for JHS.

The Tenaha Tigers and Lady Tigers will host the Timpson Bears on Friday, January 25, 2019. JV action will begin at 4:30 p.m. with varsity action to follow.

Joaquin will travel to San Augustine on Friday, January 25, 2019 for conference action beginning at 4:30 p.m. for JV.
