November 15, 2017 - Timpson ISD Bear Update

TISD Site Evacuation
TISD will have a mock site evacuation at 10:00 a.m. on November 28.  Students and staff will board buses, drive around the block and return to campus.  The purpose of a site evacuation drill is to prepare staff and students should there be a real emergency that would require evacuating the campus.

In a real site evacuation students and staff will be bused to First Baptist Church in Timpson. Parents will be notified. Parents would then be able to pick up their children from the church.  Timpson ISD strives to ensure the safety of all its students.

Timpson ISD Off to Great Start!
“It’s a good time to be a Bear” is a phrase that is heard often on campus, in the community and in the press about all the outstanding accomplishments going on at Timpson ISD. TISD Superintendent Dr. Mid Johnson said that the district offers many opportunities for students to excel in both academic and extra-curricular activities.

Dr. Johnson said he thinks it is the dedication of the hardworking staff, the support of the Timpson ISD Board of Trustees, involved parents and students who have a desire to succeed that have made the beginning of the 2017-2018 especially successful.  Dr. Johnson said Timpson ISD is a school district that wants to give students as many opportunities as possible and the skills to be successful in their pursuit of excellence.

Construction
Architect David Golden of McKinley-Golden Architects reports that Timpson ISD has completed the first phase of their Bond improvements.  Band students started the year with an expanded rehearsal hall.

It almost doubles the size of the old rehearsal hall. Acoustical and lighting improvements were also made along with the addition of an ensemble room, student restrooms, music library and instrument storage rooms. Campus draining, sidewalks and security fencing were improved. A new digital campus monument sign with marquee greets students and guests displaying up to date district news.

The elementary school is remodeled with new flooring, ceilings, new carpet in some areas, remodeled library removing the stage which allowed for more useable space.  Baseball batting cages were also completed. Construction of the event center/collegiate center is currently underway. Golden said his firm is working alongside Superintendent Mid Johnson to assure Phase II projects flow smoothly.

There will be construction updates through the winter and spring to keep students, parents and community informed on the building projects.

Dual Credit
93 students in grades 9-12 are taking 145 classes for college and high school credit.  Students have the opportunity to earn an Associates degree.  The district pays for the tuition and books.  This program gives students the opportunity to start college following high school graduation as juniors and save half the cost of attending college.  Monitors help students with time management, test taking skills as well as other essential other skills to be successful in college.

STEM
The Texas Education Agency designated Timpson ISD as a STEM Academy.  This was supposed to be just a planning year but teachers have enthusiastically embraced the program and have students working on STEM projects.  A STEM fair was held recently for students to display their projects and explain to parents and community what they are learning about science, technology, engineering and math.  One of the goals of the program is to get female students interested in these areas where currently females are underrepresented.  Careers in Science, technology engineering and math are often associated with higher paying jobs.  The goal is to create interest and develop skills beginning in pre-k and kindergarten on STEM areas.
