Transportation Commission Awards More Than $19 Million in Federal Funds to Improve Rural Transit, Boost Economy

As rural Texas grows, so does need for transportation options

April 29, 2016 AUSTIN – The Texas Transportation Commission awarded more than $19.4 million to rural transit providers across the state that assist people in getting to health care facilities, schools, employment and other necessary destinations. The federally-supported initiative provides public transportation funding for rural areas with populations of less than 50,000.

“Our rural residents rely on these transportation services to commute between jobs, school and doctor’s appointments, which helps them maintain their independence and quality of life,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. “We are pleased to be able to assist these communities in continuing these important transportation services that keep people moving safely and comfortably.”

The commission approved the action at its April meeting.

In Texas, there are 37 rural transit districts serving 246 counties.
