Twelfth Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Day 1 is Underway

Varsity basketball tournament competition is taking place today as Tenaha Holiday Hoops kicked off this morning at five area locations. Tenaha Special Events Center, Tenaha Tiger Gymnasium, Joaquin Rams Arena, Timpson Bears Gymnasium, and Panola College Arthur Johnson Gymnasium is hosting 18 Girl’s high School teams and 22 Boy’s teams.

Teams from Tenaha, Joaquin, Timpson, Shelbyville, Chireno, Sabine, New Diana, Lovelady, San Augustine, Lipan, Douglass, Kountze, Broaddus, Chapel Hill, Tatum, Centerville, Kermit, Dimebox, Avinger, Atlanta, Jefferson, Woden, White Oak, Waelder, Mineola, Academy and Rivercrest are competing.

Shelby County Today started coverage with an early boy’s game between the Jefferson Bulldogs versus the Joaquin Rams at Rams Gymnasium.

The game was close and the first quarter ended with the Rams leading the Bulldogs by a single point and a 9-8 points advantage going into the second stanza.

A 7-0 point scoring run by the ‘Dogs midway through the second quarter helped them gain a 29-19 lead at the buzzer which sent the teams into the locker rooms at the midway intermission.

Jefferson outscored Joaquin 17-14 during the third period and the Bulldogs took a 46-33 lead into the final quarter.

The Bulldogs were able to outpace the Rams 21-13 points in the final quarter and they took a 67-46 first-round win.

Joaquin will move on to face the loser of the Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill versus Beckville game being played at 11:30 a.m. on Monday morning. The Rams will tip off at Timpson on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at 8:30 a.m.

Both the Shelbyville Lady Dragons and the Dragons Boy's Varsity teams have participated at the tournament on Monday as well. The Lady Dragons fell behind the Lovelady Lions 38-23 at halftime. Lovelady outscored Shelbyville 13-9 in the third period and they took a 51-32 advantage over SHS into the final quarter. The Lady Lions eventually beat the Lady Dragons 61-40.

The Shelbyville Dragons boys team trailed the Douglass Indians 22-14 at the end of the first quarter. SHS fell behind 34-21 at halftime. Douglass held a 45-32 at the end of the third stanza and they eventually defeated Shelbyville by a 68-44 final score.

The Tenaha Tigers boys team lost to the Little River Academy Bumble Bees in double overtime by a 86-79 score. Earlier in the day the Tigers had won their opening round game with the Sabine Cardinals by a 55-46 score.

The Timpson Bear boys team won a pair of games to open the tourney. They defeated the Atlanta Rabbits 73-57 and later Dime Box 80-60.

Timpson's girls beat New Diana early by a 54-21 score and later fell to the Douglass Lady Indians 70-46.
