TX A&M AgriLife Extension Service – Shelby Family & Community Health Committee Awarded Superior Health Plan Grant

November 20, 2017 - On November 20, 2017, The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service - Shelby Family & Community Health (FCH) Committee was presented $5,000 for adult and youth programming promoting the health and well-being of low-income individuals in the Superior Health Plan community. Several hundred grant applications across the state of Texas were submitted for consideration.

The Shelby FCH Committee identifies needs, plans and implements educational programs for youth and adults in nutrition, wellness, fitness, chronic disease management, and community economic development. Our target audience includes pregnant and non-pregnant women, children in SNAP-Ed eligible or participating households, including the working poor, and senior adults. Our goal is to better the lives of Shelby County residents through an educational process that uses research-based knowledge focused on identified issues and needs. Specifically, to teach participants how to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables, learning to select foods that are relatively inexpensive and good to eat, making food dollars last longer, preparing quick, nutrition meals, and helping children learn how to eat healthier snacks that they will like.

“I’m very pleased the Family & Community Health committee is the recipient of these funds. This will help to better provide valuable nutrition and health-based educational programs to our Better Living for Texans audience in Shelby County,” stated Jheri-Lynn McSwain, Shelby County Extension Agent – Family & Community Health.
