What’s New at the Library; Thank You to All for Successful Fall Book Sale

November 17, 2015 - The Friends of the Library had a very successful fall book sale. These members work very hard storing and organizing an enormous amount of donated books for six month prior to a sale. The weeks before the sale, they set up an attractive display of several thousand books. Without their efforts, our budget for new books would be greatly diminished. Other unsung heroes of this endeavor are the buyers who continue year after year to show up and buy lots of these books. This is community recycling at its best and most rewarding for the library. A big thanks to all of you who participated.

Did you know?…that the library has collected through the years local family genealogy books. These books contain the stories of families that migrated in the 1800’s to Shelby County and surrounding counties. As family members completed their genealogy and published in book form, they have generously donated copies for the library. This is a real treasure for our local history. If you or someone you know is working on his/her family tree, you can check out what has already been done by related families. Hopefully families will continue to donate a copy to the library’s collection.

The latest donated family story is a beautifully written history of the Cartwrights of San Augustine. It reads like a fascinating novel chronically three generations of famous Texas entrepreneurs in nineteenth-century Texas. Of particular interest is Matthew Cartwright, patriarch John’s eldest son, who amassed the fourth largest fortune in Texas by 1870 and owned 362,000 acres scattered over 56 counties. This book was published by the Texas State Historical Association and written by Margaret Swett Henson, a leading authority on early Texas, and Deolece Parmelee, a former teacher and researcher for the Texas Historical commission.
