District Attorney's Office Issues Statement on Whitaker Conviction

May 13, 2022 - A Shelby County jury returned two guilty verdicts and one not guilty verdict on May 11, 2022, in the trial of Zenas Montre Whitaker. Whitaker was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Kidnaping, and Aggravated Sexual Assault. The case was tried in the 273rd Judicial District Court, Judge Jim Payne presiding. Testimony began Monday afternoon and continued throughout Tuesday and part of Wednesday with both the State and the Defense presenting witnesses.

District Attorney Court Report, March Scheduling

February 26, 2019 - In the 123rd Judicial District Court, Honorable Judge LeAnn Rafferty presiding, on February 20, 2019, sixty-one (61) felony cases were set on the docket for arraignment, status hearings, and other pretrial purposes. Shelby County District Attorney Stephen Shires finalized eight (8) cases. The remaining matters are a mix of cases that are set for trial on the March-April trial docket and the July-August trial docket.

DA Court Report: 14 Cases Finalized; Briggs Receives 118 Years

February 8, 2019 - In the 123rd Judicial District Court, Honorable LeAnn Rafferty presiding, a number of criminal matters were dealt with in addition to the Court’s domestic (family law) docket on February 8, 2019. 

Shelby County District Attorney Stephen Shires resolved and finalized 14 cases. This included State v. Newsome, Cause Number 19-CR-21021, where the defendant received 12 years incarceration in the Texas Department of Corrections Criminal Justice Institutional Division for Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver. 

DA Court Report: Seven Cases Reach Completion, Several Warrants Issued for No-Show Defendants

February 7, 2019 - In the 273rd Judicial District Court of Shelby County, Honorable James A. Payne Jr. presiding, on February 7, 2019, twenty-eight (28) felony cases were set on the docket for arraignment, status hearings, and other pretrial purposes. Shelby County District Attorney Stephen Shires finalized and resolved seven cases.  

A number of defendants did not show up for their arraignment at Court. They were: Brittney Benson, Dakota Howard, Samantha Hamilton, and Casey McKinney. As a result, warrants for their arrest have been issued. 

District Attorney Court Report: 48 Cases Called, 19 Finalized

February 6, 2019 - In the 123rd Judicial District Court, the Honorable LeAnn Rafferty presiding, 48 cases were called for status hearings, arraignments, and other various purposes on February 5, 2019.  

Shelby County District Attorney Stephen Shires was able to resolve and finalize 19 cases. A number of the remaining cases will be brought back this Friday for potential completion. These cases are all set on the April trial docket.  

District Attorney Court Report on Forgery Case

January 29, 2019 - Jury selection was set to begin today in the trial of Raymond John Fleming, Jr. in the 273rd Judicial District Court of Shelby County, Honorable James A. Payne, Jr. presiding. Mr. Fleming was charged by indictment with four felony crimes: two counts of forgery, one count of forgery against the elderly, and one count of fraudulent use or possession of identifying information against the elderly. 

Cases Presented to 123rd District Court; Nine Cases Finalized

January 26, 2019 - Judge LeAnn Rafferty of the 123rd Judicial District Court had six (6) inmates currently incarcerated in the Shelby County Jail brought over to the Court on Friday, January 25, 2019 to follow up on their appearances January 24, 2019. 

As a result, Shelby County District Attorney Stephen Shires was able to finalize nine (9) cases. This included State v. Peterson, where the defendant received 15 months incarceration in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice State Jail Division for the offense of burglary of a building.
