"Spring Is Here - Words of Wisdom" by Joan Garrett

March 30, 2024 - As the month of March ends, and April begins, it brings an old poem to mind.

March winds bring April showers that nurture May flowers.

The four seasons of the year are well known by everyone. Having come out of Winter with snow and cold weather in some parts of the country, we are happy that Spring begins in March with the culmination of windstorms experienced. Throughout the month of April rain is forever in the forecast with surprises sometime that it does not happen. However, one can experience small showers and the next day rainstorms occur.

“Easter Moments -- Words of Wisdom” by Joan Garrett

March 29, 2024 - As the month of March ends, the last day (March 31) will be Easter Day this year. In most cases it is now called Resurrection Day with many activities leading up to it to celebrate. I have always known it as Easter Egg Day. The eggs are purchased, boiled, colored, and hidden for kids and sometimes many adults helping to find them. I laugh when several eggs cannot be found because the person who hides the eggs forgets where they are. Adults participate especially if the golden egg has money inside.

Women’s History Month - Solute to All Women Teachers

March 27, 2024 - March has been full of advertisements for National Women’s History Month. What does that mean? It means that this is the month of the year that women who have made history around the world are recognized and celebrated. It is observed annually in the U. S. since the late 80s. Having started as a week of celebration for women, women in communities, school districts, and organizations desired an expansion to an entire month. The month of March eventually became a designated month of celebration.

Women’s History Month – Salute to Women Who Worked on Daniels School Reunion

March 25, 2024 - As the month of March proceeds with a lot of news reports on International Women History Month, let us remember the group of women who made history for working on the C. H. Daniels School Reunion in Center, Texas. In spite of the school being closed for many years, the original group of women brought years of enjoyment for Daniels graduates and friends throughout the years. Many are gone now but will be saluted for their hard work in keeping the legacy of the school alive.

March is National Women’s History Month

March 4, 2024 - March is National Women’s History Month. What does that mean? It means that this is the month of the year that women who have made history around the world are recognized and celebrated. There are several women I know in Center, Texas, who have made history. It has been made and celebrated by women in many organizations, in church, in schools, and in their own homes. Women are a major component in many businesses that exist. They are always the backbone of the family in their homes. They are the care givers of their family in need of assistance with health issues.

"Where Are The Bobcats?" C.H. Daniels School Reunion Month

July 7, 2023 - Summer Memories.. The month of July begins with the celebration of 4th of July. Several years ago the beginning of July was reserved for the C. H. Daniels School Alumni Reunion in Center, Texas. Those years are just memories now. With the hard work of the original reunion committee and the energy of the committee that was passed the torch in 2010 after a gap in years, the reunions have been successful. Scholarships were presented to seniors from profits, classmates were brought together, and relatives visited each other from out of town.

"Black History Salute to Gertrude Johnson Lane" by Joan Garrett

February 21, 2022 - Ms. Gertrude Johnson Lane was elected the first African American female Mayor of San Augustine, Texas where she served for about 10 years.

At 92 at the time of her death, Cousin Gertrude Lane had lived a very productive life. I had been in Center for a while when her life ended and I was able to attend the funeral services. Life came to a close after an extended time in the local nursing home where she and her husband William Lane had shared a room before his death.

A Message About 'Downhill From Here'

August 4, 2021 - 'It Is Not All Downhill From Here'... Giving credit to Terry McMillan, the author of this novel, I agree with her. After turning 70 one might think it is. It seems as if your body is not as young as your mind thinks you are at the time. Many are stricken with pains in the joints, or consistent coughs, or accidental falls. Added now is the fear of getting the virus that is causing this world wide pandemic. Hold on to faith and your belief that all will be well with your body and soul.
