Happenings at Paxton Methodist, Jan 19th

January 21, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. It is Saturday, January 18, and I am at my computer working on my sermon for tomorrow. The Gospel lesson comes from the John Gospel, which was one of the later writings to be included in the Christian Testament. We don’t know who the author of this very spiritual book was, but are fairly certain it was written at the end of the first century of the Common Era. It is very different from the first three gospels.

January 13, 2020 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. It seems like a year since I wrote my weekly article from Paxton United Methodist Church. I have spent the past two weeks either sick or getting over being sick. For two out of the last three years, I came down with the flu. This seems very unfair to me since I always get my flu shot. Finally feeling a bit better from the effects of the flu, I developed a sinus infection that kept me feeling bad. So I didn’t write an article last week and will try to get caught up.

Happenings at Paxton Methodist, Dec 30th

December 30, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. Happy New Year!  Whether we are ready or not, 2020 is about to begin. We at Paxton United Methodist Church hope all our friends and neighbors had a very Merry Christmas. Sue and I went to our daughter’s house in Dallas. We celebrated the birth of the Christ child with our daughter, son, brother, and sister-in-law. We went out to dinner on Christmas Eve, and even though our daughter made reservations over a month ago, the restaurant was packed and running behind schedule.

December 23, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother, Jesus, Amen. It has turned back to winter with a vengeance. It is Wednesday, December 18th morn and about 25 degrees at my house. My faithful companions, Gunter and Sam, are so ready to go for a walk, but I just can’t make myself bundle up and go. I will get the courage later. Winter doesn’t officially start until December 21st. Sue is getting ready to head to First Baptist Joaquin, as it is the day that children’s Christmas gifts are given to the many families who are being helped out this holiday season.

December 16, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother and savior, Jesus, Amen. It is less than three weeks until Christmas. We are moving through Advent quickly: During the lighting of the Advent Candles in worship time, we speak of the themes of Advent—hope, joy faith, and love. In Advent we not only celebrate the coming of the Christ child, but also the coming of God’s Kingdom on earth.

December 9, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother and savior, Jesus, Amen. Thursday morning my four-legged friends, Sam and Gunter, went to the city park with me for our morning walk. On Wednesday, I was all bundled up, but that morning I didn’t even need a jacket. It is too good to last, so I will just enjoy it while I can. On Saturday Sue and I went to the Arbor Assisted Living in Nacogdoches and had Christmas Brunch with Sue’s mom, Dixie. We enjoyed visiting with Dixie and Amy, Sue’s sister. We also met some very nice folks sitting with us at the table.

December 2, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother and savior, Jesus, Amen. We have begun a New Year on the ancient Christian calendar. This is the year of Matthew, so most of the lessons will come from Matthew’s Gospel in 2020. That sounds so weird—2020! It seems like just yesterday we were worried about all the computers shutting down as we entered a new century! Well, that obviously didn’t happen, as most all of us carry a powerful computer in our hands—the smart phone.

Happenings at Paxton Methodist, Nov 24th

November 24, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother and savior, Jesus, Amen. What a nice week we had weather wise. I know that I am an old curmudgeon because I don’t like hot weather and I really don’t like cold weather. Instead, it has to be just right. I wonder if there is a place to live where it stays in the 60s and 70s year round? Our daughter will be heading home shortly from her visit to Morocco. Both of our kids and my brother and sister-in-law will be coming to Joaquin to celebrate Thanksgiving.

November 18, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother and savior, Jesus, Amen. Sue and I got back home from Madrid, Spain, last Thursday. We had a really nice time with our daughter as we stayed in the old part of Madrid. Sue and I don’t get around as well as we used to, but our daughter was very patient—and finally decided we’d taxi or Uber everywhere. The worst part of traveling overseas was the long—ten hour—flight. It was nice getting home even though it sure was cold when we landed in Texas. It was cold in Madrid, but neither rain nor cold kept people out of the plazas.

November 4, 2019 - Grace and peace from our brother and savior, Jesus, Amen. Last Tuesday my puppies, Gunter and Sam, joined me in going to Haslam Baptist to see if Community Christian Services was open. They were open and busy, serving folks in our part of East Texas. I delivered the peanut butter and jelly that Paxton Methodists have been collecting during October. A young man (young being relative) came out to my truck to help me and asked if I remembered him. I did indeed—a fine young man who was a student at Joaquin when I was High School principal.
