Happenings at Paxton Methodist, August 12th

August 12, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother, Jesus. Today is August 12th which happens to be my birthday. Sometimes I am frightened when I look in the mirror and wonder who the old man is looking back at me! Oh well, time marches on. We are certainly in the dog days of summer. Our two dogs, Gunter and Sam, are like me in that they don’t want to spend too long outside. We get up in the morning and do our walking in the park; when we get back we work in the yard and garden for about twenty minutes at a time.

Happenings at Paxton Methodist, August 5th

August 5, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother, Jesus. I went to bed with a heavy heart on Saturday thinking of all those innocent people killed by gun violence in El Paso. And then woke up Sunday morning to hear of yet another mass shooting, this time in Dayton Ohio. There have been over 250 mass shootings in 2019 alone, and it seems to be only increasing. Our hearts really do go out to all the victims. We need to think about what we can do as a nation to curb such insanity.

Happenings at Paxton Methodist, July 15th

July 15, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother Jesus. We are in the midst of Ordinary Time, and unfortunately, as I start writing my article for next week, Barry is churning in the Gulf.  Saturday morning I took my puppies and our granddog to the park.  It wasn’t nearly as hot as it had been all week, and there was a gusty wind blowing. I sure feel for those on the coast and hope people stay as safe as they can—but I’m enjoying the scraps of the storm we’re getting.

July 10, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother Jesus. We are in the midst of Ordinary Time, and it sure feels like an ordinary Texas summer. We have had a wetter and milder summer until the last week or so—but here come the heat and humidity! I am watering every day; even with this effort, some of my perennials just wilt under the heat of the sun. I would say I am not really complaining—but I am!

Happenings at Paxton Methodist, June 30

July 1, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother Jesus. We have entered Ordinary Time on the church calendar and will celebrate our nation’s independence on the American calendar. I sure hope everyone has a wonderful Fourth of July with family and friends.  We have had a wet June—but I’m not complaining.  It started heating up the past week or so, but nothing like the heat wave in Europe. I saw on TV that it was an unheard-of 115 degrees in the south of France!

Happenings at Paxton Methodist, June 24th

June 24, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother Jesus. Sunday was the 2nd Sunday after Pentecost. We now enter the long period on the Christian calendar called Ordinary Time. I have read many explanations for this term: The explanation I like best is that Pentecost is the last High Holy Day until fall. Until the last century, most workers were tillers of the soil, and their world was busy with ordinary tasks. Thomas Aquinas believed that the ordinary was infused with the Divine, but we are often too busy to notice.

June 17, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother Jesus. Sunday was Trinity Sunday as well as Fathers Day. Sue and I were in Missouri last Sunday, which was The Day of Pentecost. So I decided to preach on Fathers Day and Pentecost. We had a great trip to Louisiana, Missouri. Louisiana is a quaint little town right on the Mississippi north of St. Louis. Sue’s aunt Patsy died and I conducted the graveside memorial service. We stopped and saw some of our favorite cousins on the way up and visited the picturesque towns of Hardy, AR, and Hermann, MO.

Happenings at Paxton Methodist

June 2, 2019 - Love and peace from our brother Jesus. Sunday was the Seventh Sunday of Easter. What a beautiful week we had! I have really enjoyed working in the garden. On Monday Sue and I went to the Memorial Day Program at Shelby County’s historical court house. It was a moving program, and Paxton Methodist made a good showing there. Gene received a 4-H quilt of honor—not only thoughtful but beautiful. Jo, as a member of a Gold Star family, told about a family quilt; she promised to share that story at our nursing home programs.
