March 16, 2023 - Sometimes, if we are not careful, our life becomes like the file drawer in our desk. We make a mental file folder for this drawer and in there we put everything that pertains to special subjects. We place God, religion and prayer in one file and we mark that file; “Use on Sunday only” or perhaps “Use in case of emergency.” We might add the caveat, “to be used in relation to special things.”
March 9, 2023 - Why do we live in such a mad rush? Why have you been racing about all day, as though today is your last day on earth? Why do you sit and pat your foot impatiently when your telephone call is a little slow going through?
The answer of course is always, “There is so much to be done, and so little time!” And it is true. However, have you ever heard the old saying, “Rome was not built in a day?”
March 2, 2023 - Let’s be honest. We all enjoy a compliment from time to time. However, we like to hear genuine compliments and not flattery or exaggeration. When Jesus lived on this earth, and when he complimented someone, you can be sure it was sincere. It was not superficial. It had nothing to do with their clothing or style. It had to do with their heart and character.
February 22, 2023 - Most of us have our bad days. On those days, our every act, our every thought, our every spoken sentence seems to have “but,” a “can’t” a “don’t” or such like. On those days, we are at our worst.
February 16, 2023 - Is the message of the cross current? What message is there for men and women of the 21st century? Can the events on a hill so long ago affect us now? Can the death of one man by crucifixion affect men and women when thousands can now be killed with one bomb? The answer is yes.
February 9, 2023 - King David could not build a temple, but he wrote a psalm! Three temples, one after another, crumbled in the dust, but the psalm lives today in the hearts of millions. Through three thousand years, the Twenty-Third Psalm has been a source of inspiration. It is the Christian’s great symphony, the theme of which is God’s care for His own.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Or, as Paul says it, “My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus”
“Until I went into the sanctuary of God, then I understood.” (Psalms 73:17)
February 2, 2023 - The value of attending the public meetings of the church is a matter of dispute in the minds of many people. There are some folks who go to church regularly while others do not go at all. Then there are those who are in the services occasionally on days like Christmas, Easter and Mother’s Day.
January 26, 2023 - A laugh may be the sweetest or the most bitter sound that comes from the human voice, according to the sentiment it expresses. To be sure, laughter is not an unimportant incident in a happy life, but a gift of God to serve a definite purpose and is even more useful in less happy lives.
January 19, 2023 - I read a story not long ago that comes to us out of the days when passenger train travel was the common and popular method of transportation. It seems there was a little crippled boy who was carrying a basket of candy and fruit, hurrying to the passenger gate of the train station as fast as his crutches would permit him to go. As the passengers rushed through the gate, a fast-moving young business executive accidentally hit the boy’s basket, knocking its contents in every direction.
January 12, 2023 - Some years ago, it was in the 1950’s there was a country music show on television called “Jones Junction.” It was broadcast out of Shreveport on KSLA and later on KTBS. They always closed the program with the same song. While I do not remember all of the words, I do remember it said, “Let a smile be your umbrella on a rainy, rainy, day.” Perhaps that is similar to what Paul had in mind when he wrote “Rejoice evermore” in I Thessalonians 5:16.
