January 14, 2020 – With political campaign season in full swing, the Texas Department of Transportation advises political parties, candidates and their supporters of where campaign signs can be placed along Texas roadways.
January 10, 2020 – Construction and maintenance projects are planned throughout the nine county Lufkin District for the coming week. Motorists are urged to obey all traffic control in place throughout these work zones, reduce speed and stay alert for moving equipment and workers.
December 6, 2019 - TxDOT crews and contractors are busy on the roadways daily throughout the nine county Lufkin District beginning and completing construction and maintenance. Motorists are urged to stay alert, slow down and respect all traffic control set in place near and through a work zone. As the Christmas holidays approach, work will be suspended during peak travel hours and during the holiday.
Project updates and plans for the week of Dec. 9-13 include:
November 22, 2019 - Texas Transportation Commissioners last week approved $532.9 million in new construction projects statewide, with $9.4 million approved in the Lufkin District. In addition, more than $36.4 million in maintenance projects were approved, with more than $1.5 approved in the Lufkin District.
Construction projects approved includes resurfacing various roadways with a sealcoat throughout the nine-county district. Those roads include:
October 29, 2019 – As deer season begins, motorists are urged to stay alert in pre-dawn hours and after dark. Deer are on the move through the nine-county Lufkin District and several crashes involving deer hits have been reported. TxDOT wants to remind drivers of the dangers of deer on the roadways and how quickly they will run across the roadway.
August 13, 2019 Lufkin – Area schools will be opening their doors for the new school year this month and that means school zone signal lights will be activated and school buses will be rolling.
Motorists are urged to obey all school zones and traffic control while lights are activated.
“This is an important time of year for many area children, teachers and parents,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer. “Many drivers will be in a hurry especially that first day of school and we urge motorists to stay alert and slow down to the posted school zone speed.”
June 6, 2019 - The Lufkin District will begin fog seal operations on Monday, June 10, in various areas that will require intermittent lane closures.
A fog seal is an application of a specially formulated asphalt emulsion (thin liquid oil) to an existing asphalt pavement surface. It is applied as a spray to the surface and aids in extending the life of the existing roadway. D.I.J. Construction, Giddings TX, will serve as contractor for the project that should be completed in about two weeks, weather permitting.
June 4, 2019 Lufkin - Texas transportation commissioners last week approved more than $592.8 million in highway construction projects, with more than $3 million approved for the Lufkin District.
Improvements to crossovers on various divided highways in the Lufkin District were approved for a $1.4 million safety highway improvement project that will include upgrading signing and striping. Striping Technology LP, Tyler, TX, will serve as contractor for the project. No timeline for completion has been set.

June 4, 2019 San Antonio – Approximately 1 in 5 crashes in Texas involves distracted driving, which continues to be a problem in the state, even after a state law banned texting and driving in 2017.
June 4, 2019 Lufkin – Lufkin District supervisors and district leaders met Monday to discuss the 2019 hurricane season forecast and preparations, addressing district actions and responses should a hurricane move inland from the Texas Gulf Coast.
